Yeah, I know, for all of us in reality-land it what happened is effectively the same thing. He left shortly after the raid began and got back to WH about 50 minutes later. He'd spent the previous 5 hours on a golf outing, and was clearly in no hurry to be around for the planning and launch of the operation.

Depending on how long it took from start to finish, he might have been able to catch the end part of it. Or else he was just shown video footage after the fact.
