So, are apples oranges now? One might think so after some of the reactions to the boos

and "lock him up" chants at the World Series game.

The only previous chants of "lock HER up" occurred at the manic Trump "rallies" of his rabid and extremely partisan followers.

The crowd at the ball park was not a concentration of any particular type of person or political attitudes. They were baseball fans and their "partisanship" involved whether they were cheering for the Nats or the Stros. I presume---reasonably, I believe--- that the folks chanting "lock HIM up" were a mixture of Democrats, independents and rightfully disgusted Republicans. And, unlike the choreographed cowards at Trump's Klan rallies, the baseball fans said what they said TO HIS FACE.

Criticizing Democrats for the spontaneous outpouring of disgust at the ballpark last evening is not just unfair, it's silly.

Our society has a curious relationship with "shaming." Native cultures used shaming as a control on unacceptable behaviors, and it was effective. If an individual did not curb their behaviors, that person was banned from the community. This wasn't done to attempt to control people's weight or sexuality, as it is in our society. It was to control what we would call crimes against the community. Thus, booing Trump at the ball game was a sign of a society attempting to regain its health.

I served as the top assistant to Onondaga Chief Paul Waterman. That didn't pay bills, of course -- it always made more! -- so I was employed at the county mental health clinic. I found the native way of life offered many concepts of value for our "modern" society.

I'll try to come up with some good books, etc. Although I am admittedly subjective, one of my favorites was written by my sons, who like their sisters grew up convinced Paul was their grandfather. (And they "knew" Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was their uncle!) But it's out of print for now. Probably anything by the late Vine Deloria Jr is worth reading.

Shunning is used if shaming isn't enough. At Onondaga, for example, if shaming doesn't get the results needed, the person is shunned. They lose their identity, even their name, within the community.

With malignant narcissism (Erich Fromm's description of a sociopath), it doesn't work. It's interesting to note that in the Old Testament, there is a description of such people, living on the outside of society and posing a real danger. They had a way of dealing with such people, which is pretty similar in terms of results as that found previously in the native peoples of the artic. Sociopaths would go out hunting with a group of men, but fail to return with them.

the idea of "community" is foundational and recognized as an integral part of what it is to be human. And thus an individual without any ties and investment is .. essentially nothing. A non-being.

Two things 1) this (shunning) can be very, very harsh (and in most cases we probably wouldn't recommend or sanction it) .. but also VERY effective. and 2) juxtapose this fundamental belief system against the modern world .. where we have the barest ephemeral idea of what "community" even means in our lives.

Has anyone noticed that at the creature's rallies there is always one black person in the crowd right behind him? As if he, its usually a "he", had been planted there on purpose to "show diversity" and black support.

Last night's crowd at the World Series gave lie to that image. And Trump was shocked; at one point he looked near tears. He got an unwelcome glimpse of what those outside his bubble think of him. And he hated it.

Where were those whining about the "Lock him up" chant when Trump led and still leads "Lock HER up" chants about a woman who did nothing wrong except having the temerity to run against him?
