She let them bleat for days about needing procedures for the impeachment inquiry and let them go on and on about what those procedures should be
And then BAM! Now she's now giving them what they said they want and will dare them to either vote Yes - which means they're essentially voting to ratify the impeachment inquiry and agreeing to the process Pelosi has laid out - or No - which will reveal just how full of shish they are.
Nicely done, as usual, Madam Speaker.

(102,795 posts)I think they now have the smoking gun and they are ready to go for it. And a thing happened this weekend that got me thinking about a legal nightmare it may pose to the Senate in this process. You know that resolution which was being paraded around by LeningradLindsey this past weekend? Well, they might have been trying to pollute the jurors with that but... if they have come out against the process, perhaps they will be required to recuse themselves or somehow have disqualified themselves legally by signing on to it... the vote can still be held and that would leave only 3 R Senators to participate and all the D Senators will surely be there. The text regarding Senate trial after impeachment says that a 2/3 majority of those present. That dynamic could be in play via the stupid resolution they thought was a good ploy to use.
I hope that argument can be made because that would make it certain that we can oust the criminals.

(7,604 posts)Now, I'm reserving judgment and I've backed off giving her the lip. If, over some time, it looks like Pelosi was successfully employing a strategy that expresses the will of the people and the right thing to do, then I'm right behind her.
Politics is an art. So let the artist do her thing.

(28,269 posts)If she had done this 2-3 months ago, she would not have had enough D-votes to get it passed. And until we got testimony about the QPQ and tRump's direction of the deal, Repugs (and probly the popular majority) would've refused to see the problem for what it is. Now, there is no way they can ignore the elephant in the room.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)And not only would she not have had enough votes, we would have still been stuck in the Russia collusion vortex (was it collusion, no collusion, was it a conspiracy, connect the dots, what dots, etc.) that was too complicated to explain much less draw out a coherent narrative. The impeachment process would have been opened and closed and, even if impeachment passed the House, which it probably wouldn't have, it would have been disposed of in the Senate and we would now be looking at all of it in the rearview mirror. And he would have been home free - especially since the Dems wouldn't have gotten a second bite at the apple.
By biding her time and building the case Pelosi has taken this to a whole new level. As you said, not only does the country see in plain terms just how corrupt and bereft of any decency this man is, making impeachment now a foregone conclusion, there is now a remote possibility (very, very remote, but until a few weeks ago the chances were between nil and none) chance he could be removed. And even if he's not removed, there will likely be some Republican votes to convict, which would change the complexion of this entire endeavor.
She has played this brilliantly so far.

(77,324 posts)How much longer I don't know but that was Trump's "Ceausescu moment."
In Dec. 1989 Nicolae Ceausescu stood on a balcony before a crowd in Bucharest, Romania and
then the crowd turned on him at first he was angry and then you could see the fear in his face
Nancy's telling Trump to his face in the Cabinet Room that "all roads lead to Putin" (with you) tells
me that they have the goods on Trump and that his fate is sealed.
Very soon even hard core Trump supporters (except the ones on the take from Russia) are going to
dump him because the man is crook, a traitor, and sticking with him will become toxic.
BTW I might be wrong too.
BTW part 2 knows her stuff too. I think her dad was mayor of Baltimore and a congressman her now late
brother was mayor of Baltimore too.

My dad passed last January and I went by Ohio State's NROTC office to see if they could
have a midshipmen @ the service .... he was in the Navy during the Korean War ... and to
walk by and see the chain of command posted on a board with fuckhead Trump's picture
on the top was really shocking.

Rep. Mark Meadows told me of the resolution: Unless you have a vote of inquiry on the House floor, a rule vote is certainly not the same thing. .. You know its not the same thing unless its an impeachment inquiry vote.

(3,363 posts)are now saying this proves Dems have been engaged in a sham impeachment process and are realizing they need to hold a vote now.
Republicans are going to keep moving the goalposts, so I'm not entirely sure what this accomplishes.

I REALLY hope a Democrat calls for a roll call vote so we can get all the votes on record.
It should be a 433-0 vote (I think there are two vacant seats)

(17,377 posts)actually understand that dynamic; the Rs voting basically against their own proposal. Doing so hasn't seemed to affect their voter support when it comes to the ACA or the federal deficit. They and their voters are all about defeating "liberals" and getting rid of "the problem" as Reagan put it, i.e., gub'mint. Firm -- let alone thoughtful -- positions on policy issues are for them an inconvenience and irrelevant. Very frustrating.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)It's much more straightforward and it's a stark, binary choice.
They're either voting to approve procedures for impeachment, which means agreeing to move forward with impeachment or they're voting not to approve procedures (including those that give them subpoena powers) that they've been screaming to get for weeks.
She put them between a rock and a hard place. It will be interesting to see what they do.
Dan
(5,179 posts)There are approximately 80 GOP members involved in the various impeachment inquiry.
I suspect by now a majority of them probably support impeachment and a formal vote will confirm that.
If that turns out to be true then trumps ass is toast.

Vote against Trump? Erodes base, and you're still a Republican who's supported Trump for 3 years.
Try to move those numbers. Republicans are painted into a corner.
