Michelle Obama spoke out against “white flight” in a recent interview, saying she experienced it as a kid and that it remains a problem…and it seems to have triggered Donald Trump Jr.

“As families like ours — upstanding families like ours who were doing everything we were supposed to do and better — as we moved in, white folks moved out because they were afraid of what our families represented,” the former first lady said Tuesday at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago.

“I want to remind white folks that y’all were running from us … This family, with all the values that you read about, you were running from us. And you’re still running because we’re no different than the immigrant families that are moving in,” she continued. “The families that are coming from other places to try to do better. But, because we can so easily wash over who we really were — because of the color of our skin, because of the texture of our hair — that’s what divides countries, artificial things.”

After the speech, Don Jr. took to Twitter to slam Obama for buying a house in Martha’s Vineyard:

It was one of a select number of places where African Americans could vacation:

https://www.dandelionchandelier.com/2017/08/28/marthas-vineyard-black-elite/

why is martha’s vineyard so important to the black elite?

The black professional class has been vacationing on the island of Martha’s Vineyard since the early 1900’s. But it really wasn’t until the high-profile attorney Vernon Jordan was photographed in the 1990’s welcoming Bill and Hillary Clinton on behalf of the community that the general public became aware of this fact.

Generations of African-Americans have owned summer homes on Martha’s Vineyard. My parents first began summering there in 1959, before my brother and I were born. Even then, black families came to the island from every major American city. A significant number from New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, Atlanta – and even Los Angeles. Now my wife and our kids and I spend time there every summer, as do lots of the people I grew up with.

had a cottage on Martha's Vineyard in Oak Bluffs and every summer when school was over, they would pack up and drive up there to stay for the summer.

And yup, that's where the black upper middle/upper classes would go (although it gradually evolved to be that type of place).

Valerie Jarrett, Vernon Jordan, and others:
https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a6668/oak-bluffs-african-american-community/

..."A group of Methodists built a tabernacle in Wesleyan Grove for open air revivals, and rows of gingerbread cottages sprang up around it. The residential development was called Cottage City until it was reincorporated as Oak Bluffs, in 1907.

Dorothy West, "the Kid" of the Harlem Renaissance, grew up going there every summer. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. came to stay at Shearer Cottage, a seasonal inn catering to African-Americans—when very few places did—and beat the drum in his newspaper, the People's Voice, urging his readers to visit. Many did, and a number of them became serial renters or homeowners. By the 1950s, middle- and upper-class black doctors, lawyers, and executives and their families had formed their own society, with its own yearly rituals. When President Obama first vacationed on Martha's Vineyard, in 2009, it was seen as a nod to both the Kennedy-Clinton presence and the unique heritage of Oak Bluffs.
... .

HENRY LOUIS GATES JR. (director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard) When I was growing up, there were only three places where black people could summer on the beach. There was Martha's Vineyard, there was Sag Harbor, and there was a place on the Chesapeake [Highland Beach, Maryland].
......
So, , ironically, when most of America was discovering the wonders of the Cape and the Vineyard through the Kennedys, there was a class of black people who knew that world very well. And very few people could have imagined that when John Kennedy gave his civil rights speech saying that James Meredith was going to be admitted through the force of the federal government to the University of Mississippi, there were black families that had owned property on the Cape and on the Vineyard for a very long time by that point. "....(more)

of his, knowing if he went on even another three words, it'd almost certainly be mandatory.

But if our ex- first lady is going to go on about white people running because black people move in, it's not completely inappropriate to point out that she's buying in Martha's Vineyard. We routinely make far bigger stretches here.

These days, of course, they will not be among the first or only AAs to become members of that very elite neighborhood. Reportedly they rented an estate and liked it so much they bought it. I wish them much joy of it, and hope they don't feel obliged to do more than nod coolly to Dershowitz if they run into him at the farmer's market.

P.S., for those who are into this sort of thing, to my surprise the listing for what is reported to be this purchase hasn't already removed its photos of the estate. https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/79-Turkeyland-Cove-Rd_Edgartown_MA_02539_M46762-74498#photo1

That house is not exactly beachfront. It will not be inundated in the Obamas lifetime.

My wife and I bought a lot on a bay in north Florida to retire on in a 160 year old town. Bayside, not beachside. It will not flood in my 20-30 years left. 40 feet above the maximum high tide. And protected by barrier islands we chose not to buy on for the reasons you state.

But I overall agree with you. If you are middle aged or less buying a low lying ocean front property is crazy.

But for lovers of the gulf there is something magical living close to it.

Money, is not a problem on the islands......
