Trump doesn't know a damn thing about cars. I seriously would be willing to bet good money that Trump has never driven a car. And he'll never have to put up with the bullshit that us regular car buyers go through. He'll never have to worry about things like MPG or smog emissions. Or sitting in traffic on the 91 freeway at 6:00PM. He'll never buy a Hyundai or a Kia or a Toyota or a Subaru or a Chevrolet. He probably doesn't even know what the "extra junk on cars" is.
In fact this fight that he's brewing about cars isn't even about cars. What it really is, is a conservative "fuck you" to my home state of California for not voting for Trump in 2016. See, thanks to endless propaganda about "the left", conservatives really have it in for California because reasons. And what's really ironic is that the party that thinks that it cares about states' rights, only cares about states' rights when it suits them. Otherwise they can fuck right off.
All this is, is Trump parroting whatever garbage he hears about on Fox & Friends (which is where I'm sure that he heard this nonsense in the first place) and that News Corporation, once again, really has it in for California. Because Rupert Murdoch has an anti-progressive agenda and he's not afraid to let the whole world know about it. Once again, this fight is brought to you by Fox pundits and AM radio talk show hosts.
It's a damn shame that they have actual car makers participating in this fight. It really is.

Automakers finally can see the writing on the wall. They aren't going to reengineer the whole process just like the lightbulb makers aren't either.

(3,433 posts)The right, just like global dictators, have figured out how to exploit Trump's narcissism. So Trump might make it about California not voting for him. But the oil company libertarian, billionaire American oligarch bought and paid for propaganda media and elected officials are being much more strategic.
They recognize that California maintaining high emission standards will hurt their plans for more carbon profits. Because as California goes, so goes much of the rest of the country.
Its a strategic power play.
