Both my grandmother and my grandfather were summoned to the local offices of the NKVD and asked to defend themselves against charges that they were "enemies of the state."
Had they not fled the country, the best case scenario for them was the fate of the rest of my family, which was to be boarded on to trains and shipped off to Siberia.
The worst case scenario for them was, well, much worse.
