(28,333 posts)Gianforte pleads guilty to assault in incident with reporter
Judge Rick West sentenced Gianforte to a 180-day deferred sentence, 40 hours of community service, 20 hours of anger management and a $300 fine along with a $85 court fee.
West originally sentenced Gianforte to a four days of jail time, to be completed in part through a work program, but switched instead to the hours of community service and anger management as those guilty of assault charges are ineligible for the work program.
A misdemeanor assault conviction in Montana carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $500, according to the state government website.
Gianforte has apologized to the journalist, Ben Jacobs, and also pledged to donate $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists, an organization that promotes press freedom, "in the hope that perhaps some good can come of these events."

Any guy who can do a body slam hes my guy, president says
___________________________________
President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Montana Rep. Greg Gianforte for physically assaulting a reporter on the eve of a special election last year.
Addressing a rally in Missoula on his third trip to Montana this year, Trump at first only alluded to the 2017 incident. Never wrestle him, he said after calling Gianforte onstage.
But then the president went further.
Any guy who can do a body slam hes my guy, Trump said to loud cheers.
The president said he was overseas when he first heard about Gianfortes altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs and the speculation that it could hurt Republican chances in the election for the open at-large seat.
I know Montana pretty well, I think it might help him, Trump recalled thinking. And it did.

Gianforte did win, but this incident did NOT help him. It happened literally hours before election day and many/most Montanans did not find out about it until after the vote. Gianforte won by a shockingly small margin - single digits in deep ruby red Montana. It was considered a dark harbinger for the coming midterms, and it was.
Edited to add: Trump doesn't know FUCK about Montana and he never will. This isn't the kind of place he likes to spend time in (apart from his pathetic attempt to unseat Tester). He wouldn't last a single day here. Put him on a trail alone and he would most certainly die.

(9,401 posts)need to be dumbed down in my opinion. Asking if the pResident asking for foreign assistance in the upcoming election doesn't provide the same effective soundbite as something like..." do you agree that pResident tRump EXTORTING a foreign leader in violation of the law is WRONG??"

He wasn't even that angry when he headbutted the camera. Just dismissive and disrespectful of news media in general. Notice his little grin as the door closes.
It kind of scares me just how Republicans can continue to stubbornly support a corrupted President. Especially in such a petulant manner. They don't care if he is below 50% approval. Like they already have Putin's troll army, who are practising on Africa now in preparation for the US election, the courts approving gerrymandering, And they are friends with the owners of the voting machines. And who knows what anti democratic laws R Governors will implement before next November.
