Obama to address top Democratic donors in Washington

Politico

Former President Barack Obama will speak to some of the Democratic Party's biggest donors at a gathering of the secretive Democracy Alliance later this month in Washington, D.C., according to multiple people familiar with the event.

Obama will appear at the donor conference, which takes place Nov. 13 to Nov. 16, in conversation with Stacey Abrams, the Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia in 2018. The event will take place shortly before Obama heads to Silicon Valley for a high-dollar fundraiser benefiting the Democratic National Committee — two signs that the former president is beginning to step up his political involvement ahead of the 2020 election.

The Democracy Alliance, a club of donors who pour millions of dollars into organizations on the left to build up Democratic Party power, does not publicly disclose its donors. Members have included George Soros, the billionaire financier and philanthropist; Donald Sussman, a hedge fund magnate; and Tom Steyer, a financier who also is a current candidate for president.

The group is steering clear of endorsing a candidate for president in 2020, but it has been revving up donors to go full bore on defeating President Donald Trump, said Gara LaMarche, president of Democracy Alliance. It plans to pour $100 million into a swing-state spending plan to defeat Trump in 2020.
