This one bugs me every time it pops up on Facebook.
Among the US protests that Russia funded was the anti-Keystone XL movement. Keystone XL was an attempt to shorten the existing Keystone pipeline, cutting nearly a thousand miles off its course and so reducing its exposure to leaks by about 40%.
It was never built, largely because well-meaning people protested it, but the result is that the old, longer pipeline is still being used, and we have leaks like this one in North Dakota, in a place the XL would have bypassed.
I think cancelling the XL was probably the biggest own-goal in environmentalist history.

Any longer route is more cost, more chance of leaks.

(6,110 posts)because when the wind stops or night falls, we still need energy from fossil or nuclear.
Electricity cannot be stored. It must be produced as needed and used.

(86,307 posts)have happened in my state. A few years ago there was a leak from a poorly placed pipeline that passes under the Yellowstone River. We need to get off fossil fuels ASAP.

(86,307 posts)But since you asked, all fossil fuels should stay in the ground. The transition has not been made due to lack of will.

(4,544 posts)Thing is, being an Albertan, I'm a bit sensitive about all the flack coming from US sources about oil sands crude production when US crude production exceeds all of Canada by a wide margin and is growing rapidly (due mainly to shale oil & fracking).
All fossil fuels cannot stay in the ground - not yet but I agree we have to reach that point and, sooner than later.

(101,262 posts)The report, released by the majority staff of the House Science Committee, said it found evidence Russian-sponsored agents used Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to suppress the research and development of fossil fuels and stymie efforts to expand the use of natural gas.
This report reveals that Russian agents created and spread propaganda on U.S. social media platforms in an obvious attempt to influence the U.S. energy market, Texas Representative Lamar Smith, the chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, said in a statement. Russian agents attempted to manipulate Americans opinions about pipelines, fossil fuels, fracking and climate change.
According to the report, groups such as the Internet Research Agency, a Russian company with links to the Russian government, used propaganda to target Energy Transfer Partners Dakota Access Pipeline, TransCanada Corp.s Keystone XL pipeline, and other projects. Russian-sponsored agents also funneled money to U.S. environmental groups in an attempt to portray energy companies in a negative way and disrupt domestic energy markets, the report said.

but "co-ordinated and funded the anti-KXL protests"? Evidence, please. That is a serious allegation against many environmentalists, if you say they were co-ordinated by Russia.
