Interviewing Congresswoman Jackie Speier:
MARGARET BRENNAN: You're speaking to us from California. We know your home state has been just ravaged by some of these wildfires. The president tweeting about it this morning and has seemingly been blaming your governor for as he put it "failing to clean the forest." The president said though that California won't get any more federal money for help. What's your response to that? Why should taxpayers make up for what the president says "is the state's self-made problem"?

Really, Margaret, really? And you were saying this in straight face?

(2,945 posts)California, federal agencies (including the USDA Forest Service and USDI Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service) own and manage 19 million acres (57%). Why should Californians be expected to pay this financial obligation of the feds? Why aren't the CA state and federal delegations pointing this out to nimrods such as Brennan?

(35,300 posts)It's location.
You don't build in areas next to where a fire *should* burn because it's a good thing for the forest.
The Kincade fire isn't near federal land, as far as I can tell.
The Taboose fire is on or near federal land. Didn't know there was a fire there until just now, and it's on day 58.
Can't tell about the Maria fire, but if it's adjacent to federal land, it's DOD.
Saddle Ridge, Getty ... Don't look close.
Burris fire looks good for on/near federal land, but it's hard to be sure. At the same time, it's an area where people have built in the middle of federal land. They like the wilderness. With the wilderness comes burns--some natural, some artificial. At that point, the only thing you do is make sure that the ground that is leading up to the wilderness is clean of combustible stuff. If it's just Forest Service land, clearing around the edges on federal land is possible; if wilderness, then it's not. But you still don't build close to wilderness and expect the wilderness to behave itself.
Hillside fire, tough call. But the Sobrante and Palisades fires are clear of federal liability.
So while it could be an issue, a few minutes' looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intonation_(linguistics)#The_ToBI_system says that it's a distraction. "Look there, don't look here" sort of misdirection, a hope to avoid blame by blaming somebody else that might be responsible. Most of the fires are either on private or state land.
This still doesn't deal with whether the "no more aid" is appropriate or not, or even something that's actually entirely under his control.

question everything
(47,472 posts)REP. SPEIER: Well it's not a self-made problem. I mean it's a national disaster when you have winds of over 100 miles per hour and you have a utility that turns off the electricity and then turns it back on and it sparks and creates yet another fire. You know the president has a serious problem with California, because they didn't support him and so now he's trying to take some action against them.
MARGARET BRENNAN: All right. Congresswoman thank you very much for joining us--

(36,745 posts)Building way too close to shores and in flood zones in hurricane prone areas. But why isnt Dump cutting off aid for those regions?
I think we all know the answer to that question.
