Hi DU friends,
First, thanks to all those that have helped us in the past. You have been a treasure trove of knowledge. I turn to you again for help.
Hubby turned 65 in July - I am 54. I am working (and will for the next 15 years) and he's on my insurance plan (very happy with plan) and that plan include prescription drug coverage. Nothing is changing as far as his enrollment in my plans. We have a few questions.
1. He is signed up for Medical Part A (Hospital) only. I am assuming that's all we need to do
2. Does he need to sign up for Medicare Part D since he already has coverage under me? Should we sign up for the cheapest plan now and then get a good one later?
Thanks to all for all you help.
Paula

(1,188 posts)My wife has an excellent policy that I am also on. It includes prescription coverage. When I enrolled in Medicare her policy on me became the supplemental policy to Medicare. It still covers my prescriptions. Also, the price for my wifes policy to cover me decreased since it now became a secondary policy to Medicare. I see no reason to sign up for part D but its always good to check with Medicare

(1,529 posts)He needs to sign up for Part B. And he needs a supplement. And he needs Part D. I would advise against an Advantage plan. It's going to cost a few hundred dollars. Many people are unaware of that. There is also a time limit on registering.

(877 posts)That's what we're trying to find out - he has insurance through me - why sign up for what he doesn't need now?
Thanks

(17,373 posts)If your employer has more than 20 employees and you are still working, any coverage he receives through them would be primary over Medicare.
The time limit for applying for B and D without penalty does not apply as long as he is covered under employer sponsored insurance, the time limit will start when you retire or no longer have employer based coverage.
