Mark Zuckerberg should pay a price for what he is doing to democracy, Hillary Clinton has said, as she expressed doubts about whether free and fair elections were even possible in the wake of Facebooks decision to not factcheck political advertising.
Speaking in New York at a screening of The Great Hack, a Netflix documentary about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate cited the threat to upcoming elections in both the US and UK as she made the damning remarks about Facebooks decision to allow politicians to lie in adverts posted to its platform.
Her intervention comes amid speculation she may mount a third bid for the presidency.
She said it was inevitable that false information on Facebook would have an impact on elections because propaganda works. In 2016, she said fake news on Facebook that Pope Francis had endorsed her opponent, Donald Trump, really did have an impact and predicted its only going to be more powerful going forward because it is more well tested. They know what they were successful at.
She added: And we are getting warning signals all the time about what is happening right now and how it is likely to affect our next election.

(68 posts)I am not going to be 'oohhh! I'm better than you!!!I've never had a Facebook!" or "I've quit Facebook! I'm better than you people who still use it."
Look, I love seeing pictures of my friends kids and see them posting about new jobs, big new things happening in their life and all.
But, my gosh, that's not the majority of what I'm seeing on Facebook nowadays. It's mostly news and sharing political stuff. No wonder Gen Z isn't interested in joining. I can remember when Facebook had a Discussion tab in groups and how stupid everyone thought the like button was when it came out. I can remember when it was a SOCIAL NETWORK.

https://petitions.moveon.org/sign/facebook-youtube-banWouldn't it be nice if Facebook got completely out of politics? Wouldn't it be nice to connect with friends and family without having to filter for their political beliefs?
I might start a petition of my own as I don't think Moveon will be seen as not biased.

(19,001 posts)I've thought of deleting FB, but I want to be part of our message on there. If I'm off FB, then it's just 1 less person helping to decipher and spread the truth.
Personally, I think FB would be happy to get out of politics, it's not as profitable for them as its worth.

(3,039 posts)Great idea just signed it. It would be great if we only had some liberals in the Bay Area that could create a flash mob in the FB parking lot in Menlo Park. 300 people could change history.

Also, and not to be nitpicky or anything, but how in hell would a single flashmob in the parking lot change history? Sure, I'd go to such a protest if I didn't live 400 miles away, but it would be with the knowledge that Zuck himself really wouldn't give a damn.
What Zuck needs is a good dose of Teddy Roosevelt trustbusting -- in other words, stringent laws against his business practices.

(25,959 posts)should have this level of influence over the electoral process without some sort of oversight or rules about what information (or lies) can be funneled through them, especially with the amount of money involved.

(70,476 posts)We wouldn't have won without Facebook. Cambridge Analytica and the Russians pumped the lies into America and the Trump people used Facebook to spread them to selected people using algorithms. Zuck knew all about this scam.

to break Facebook up once Democrats are back in power.
Thank you Hillary !
