(3,363 posts)vote Democratic because of the long history of Democrats in the South and their support of blue collar workers. Same reason West Virginia votes for a Democratic Senator.

(128,965 posts)The urban areas are blue and yes much of the rest of the state is red, but those urban areas have a population that is equivalent to a pile of rural counties combined. If anything, at least from what I saw last night with Kornacki's wild gyrations, the across-the-Ohio-River Cincinnati 'burbs in Kentucky, have been bluing up a bit more of late and may have really helped make the difference to offset the higher turnouts from the more sparsely populated red areas.
I think that like what you see with Jon Tester in MT, some states have those "favorite sons". Hell... it almost seems like fairytale land when you think of someone like John D. Rockefeller IV been such a long-time U.S. Senator in a state like West Virginia!

(13,783 posts)... of electing Dem governors, I'm thinking the outcome last night may not be significant after all. Except, of course, that Stupid decided it was so significant that it would be a referendum on him. We have much to thank him for... like releasing that letter.

(1,439 posts)Plenty of old-school democrats in KY & WV are essentially trumpists. Like that county clerk that was denying same sex marriage licenses.
