Reminder from November 1972 Nixon 60%: 520 EV, McGovern 38%; 17 EV

Less than two years later Nixon was forced to resign in the face of the probability of impeachment and removal.

So do not think that Trump even now cannot be impeached AND removed. Yes it may still be a long shot, but things can change quickly.

Re Watergate, "The House approved the resolution, which was not a measure of actual impeachment sentiment, 410–4."

Trump impeachment inquiry: "232-196". Today's Republicans discard right/wrong when it suits their purposes.

Republicans didn't really jump ship until after the SCOTUS decision on the tapes.

But I take your point. Yes they were less partisan, particularly in the Senate where you had guys like Howard Baker.

4. I still think the one huge difference between then and now is fox news

Anyone paying attention in the 70s actually got some news of the scandal. Now 40% of the country lives in a fox news cocoon. Thats why his approval curve looks completely flat compared to every other President in the polling era. And thats why the pressure on republicans in Congress is to continue supporting Trump despite the lunacy of it and not the other way around.
