(21,786 posts)Americans at the time were taller than Europeans thanks to better early-childhood nutrition--at the time of the Revolution the average American man was 5'8", about two or three inches taller than the average European; that declined to an average height for American men born in 1850 of 5'7", due to the effects of both urbanisation and mass immigration from Europe in the mid-19th century).

(66,293 posts)Average height for English & French men in the 18th Century was around 5'5".
The English calculated height slightly differently than the French, so the Napoleon's French height of 5'7" translated to 5'4" or so in the English method.

(21,675 posts)My bfs/hubs over the years have ranged from 5'5" to 6'5" (I'm 5 foot 8 inches). The taller ones seem to be more self confident. I had a guy once tell me he wasn't interested because I was taller than him. Oh well. And there are lots of tall men who prefer very short women.
hlthe2b
(102,132 posts)That said, it exists and as a result, many short men (even the most admirable men) do manifest the stereotypical "short man's syndrome" to some extent. Perhaps that actually drives their success, though.
Short, for men, is relative though. A 5 foot 7-inch man is not short to me as a short woman but is considered so by many men. Just ask Tom Cruise.

(52,123 posts)people rarely think about it, and if it does come up, they often think it's perfectly normal or reasonable. especially in romantic situation. i've known plenty of people who believe in diversity and would never rule out dating anyone on the basis of something like race or religion, but would absolutely refuse to date anyone outside their desired height parameters (usually men refusing to date a taller woman, or a woman refusing to date a shorter man).
statistics show that taller people get paid more, get promoted faster, get put in leadership roles more readily, etc.
on the other hand, average to slightly below average height people tend to live longer, so we've got that on our side

(22,011 posts)5'7" was pretty average. Men 6"+ were considered giants.
Also hundreds of years ago, when I was still dating, I dated plenty of shorter guys. They always added a couple inches to their actual height. I think its a direct correlation to macho self-esteem. Of course, my ex is 6'4", and it didn't help him much.

(63,221 posts)I do not have a problem with men's height, but I do feel like many short men feel like they have to overcompensate by being hyper-aggressive assholes. Then there are other tall men like Trump with tiny little peens who also have to overcompensate. It's always one thing or another with them. Their height or their dick.
Notice how Obama was always a man of dignity, grace and respectability. No insecurity there.

He replaced future hall of famer Sammy Baugh in the starting lineup after the fourth game and received All-Rookie honors at the end of the season.[7] The next year, he was limited with a knee injury and also shared the starting position with Jack Scarbath.

(5,812 posts)...used to be almost 5'11". Have shrunk in my old age...70+ years now.
When I was 12 years old I was 5'8" tall...this was back in 1960 in a small town in the mid-West. Do short men have problems with me being so tall? Depends.
Those who have convinced themselves that at my same height, but clearly not 6' tall, that they are in fact a six-footer, most have had a ton of problems with me. Those men who will admit to being 5'10" to 5'113/4" -- no problem with being about the same height as me.
Also those men a ton shorter than me? Most could not give a shit that I towered over them and did not care if I wore heels.

(5,812 posts)...pushing nearly 6'4" and he never even added a half-inch to his height of 6'3". Same to my current gentleman friend...clearly well over 6'3" tall and in his mid-70s.
I also have a late gentleman friend who passed away in the mid 2000s...he gave his height as 5'11-1/2". Had no problem with me being way taller in heels.
IMO, I think it's a point of being secure about who you are inside and not what your outsides are about.

(34,095 posts)There are a lot of short men who have done wonderful things. It is sad and as a woman being judged on almost everything I understand.
Maybe it is because I am short that I never even thought about it being a problem until I got older.
I have a son who is around 5'7" and the younger is something over 6'. It was never a problem.

(11,726 posts)There are height limits for men in the military, fire fighting, and police forces. People who are shorter than average are often seen as lesser.
I don't think that being short means that you are more likely to be sexist or misogynistic, but there may be a level of self consciousness that increases the intensity of such already present attitudes.

(9,975 posts)I have been as tall as 6'7", as big as 315#. I am from a family (both sides)of large men. We tend to think that SHORT is a self image issue that there is a Mental Height, as IQ was once called Mental Age.
It's more likely that large people who are "mentally short" end up on the margins,, or are beaten into growing up.

(1,845 posts)I'm no psychologist, but my amateur observations would be that tall men get a certain amount of gravitas from their size. I'd guess it's instinctual, like our tendency to tribalism.
In our semi-intellectual society, it has no place nor meaning, but it's still there. Humans are quite distant from being logical creatures

Trumps Height Bias
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/22/opinion/trump-height-bias.html
Oct. 22, 2017
Senator Bob Corker, Republican of Tennessee, has clashed with President Trump since announcing he wont be seeking re-election in 2018.Credit...Tom Brenner/The New York Times
To the Editor:
Caught in Bright Lights of a Reality Show That Never Ends (White House Memo, Oct. 11) demonstrates that President Trump may have a bias against those of short stature.
Mr. Trump repeatedly insults opponents because of their height (Liddle Corker, Little Rocket Man, Little Marco) and overlooked Senator Bob Corker for secretary of state reportedly because he was too short, at 5-foot-7, to be the countrys top diplomat.
In an era when other forms of discrimination have a national stage, this pervasive form of discrimination is overlooked and, as shown by the president, openly practiced. It is surprising that there is not a national discussion about height discrimination.
Even though height is an uncontrollable characteristic, height discrimination goes largely unaddressed under the law. Historically, tall people have been perceived more favorably and treated better than their shorter counterparts.
Further, studies show that height has a significant effect on a persons salary and financial outlook.
Mr. Trump is not unique in his mistreatment of short people. Our society licenses such behavior by allowing it. Let the conversation begin!..............
