My ear doc wants to set me up with a “Contralateral Routing Of Signals” (CROS) hearing aid, designed specifically for single-sided hearing loss. The deaf-side unit has microphones and an amplifier chip but no speaker (obviously); instead, it transmits the sound wirelessly to the receiving hearing aid on the functioning ear.

I’ve tested a unit in the doc’s office and it’s a very strange experience— although your hearing everything courtesy of your “good ear,” your brain nevertheless perceives sound “in the middle,” as if the dead ear is working and you’re back to stereo mode.

No doubt the traditional hearing-aid downsides still exist— tinny sound, picks up every stray noise, certain tones are still difficult, the usual.

I lost my left ear hearing in 2013 and the specialist I went to had those as an option too.

They wanted like 2 grand or something for it and my insurance at the time wouldn’t cover it.

For me it might have been 30 years worth of drivers side wind noise.

My insurance will pay 80 percent, but that still leaves a hefty balance. So I’m still kicking the can down the road, decision-wise.

Actually, I struggled with Menieres Disease off and on since age 21, and, after 30-plus years of that, its final chapter is irreversible deafness. The left ear went out in ONE DAY in 2016. Docs tried to bring it back with prednisone, but all I gained was 50 lbs. from steroids. Never regained hearing, and am still working off the weight! I just hope my right ear hangs on for the duration.

As it is, every third sentence to my wife is, “Excuse me?” And with media, it’s default captioning every time.
