His concern was PR. He was already associate AG. He wanted and became the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York - a political appointment. He'd switched to the Republican party a month after Reagan won.

He didn't want a messy divorce with the Catholic Church dogging him politically.
He dumped his second wife via press conference as his term as NY Mayor wound down.

Didn't stop him from breaking Church rules after failing to win Republican nomination:

Strangely, I do remember his second wife from back in the day. When I was away at school, Donna Hanover was the nightly news anchor for the local Utica, NY, station.
