JMC Analytics notes that early voting in the Louisiana governor’s race, which ended last night, was the highest ever for a non-presidential election.

Key takeaway: “Whatever the turnout levels are from election cycle to election cycle, black voters (who are almost unanimously Democratic) tend to show up in greater numbers on the last day. But very rarely do they turn out to the extent that they did yesterday: a whopping 40% of the last day early voters were black (blacks represent 31% of Louisiana’s registered voters). As further illustration of how unprecedented black participation this strong is, in the 116 days of available data for in person early voting going all the way back to 2008, only four other times has the black early vote as a percentage of the total vote ever hit 40% (and three of those times were in 2008, when Barack Obama was first elected).”

but without African Americans showing up to vote in big numbers, democrats lose.

Edwards did some things that pleased republican voters, but after the primary scare it looks like he has made a concerted effort to reach out to African Americans, if he wins it will be because of higher vote from African Americans topping off the progressive leaning White vote to take him over the top.

People that say that we need to cater to republicans need to wake up. The Republican Party has been a reactionary party since passage of the first civil rights legistlation, it is dominated by Whites that harbor racial hatred or angst, we can't compromise with that sentiment.

They are super organized in Louisiana and are the hearts of the black communities.

Given that John Bel Edwards is white, if black voters turn this election for Democrats, we must acknowledge that black women are responsible and give them their due.

Just looked and black demographic is about 32%. I read that black turnout in MS was disappointingly low the other day, but I didn't read more about that adn am wondering why. But this is particularly welcome news now.

two white men were running. Democrats in the Deep South, especially white men, don’t go out of their way to attract black voters, and that’s why they lose. IMO, they play it safe and try to appeal to white Dems only. There aren’t enough white Dems to sway an election in Mississippi. If they don’t speak to the issues that affect AAs, they will continue to lose.
