https://www.rawstory.com/2019/11/gops-marsha-blackburn-roasted-for-invoking-jesus-to-bash-trump-impeachment-but-actually-quoting-shakespeare-instead/Far-right white evangelicals have been insisting that God himself sent Donald Trump to govern the United States, and Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee joined them in opposing Trumps impeachment when in an absurd tweet posted on Sunday she invoked Jesus name to make her argument.
Responding to a November 10 tweet by attorney Mark Zaid (who represents the Ukraine whistleblower), Blackburn asserted, A 3-year, coordinated effort has been underway to remove @realDonaldTrump from office. Jesus warned us watch out for the lawyers.
But Twitter users have been pointing out that the comment about lawyers that Blackburn drew attention to didnt come from Jesus but rather, from William Shakespeare who lived long after New Testament times. Shakespeare was born in England in 1564 and died in 1616 at the age of 52.

(8,050 posts)The quote is, "First thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
My vague memory is that this was a somewhat satirical reference to the Peasant's Revolt. During the Revolt the rebels made a concerted effort to burn court records and other official documents to forestall the mass foreclosures on peasant farms that were a major cause of the revolt. Killing "all the lawyers" (that is, court officers) would make it that much more difficult for landlords to claim lands and foreclose on peasant holdings.
I hadn't realized Shakespeare died so young. What an amazing genius.

We all know the famous phrase from Henry VI, Part II, The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.
You know; the slimy lawyers.
The true context is not what it looks like.

The First Thing We Do, Let's Love All the Lawyers
By John V. Denson
March 4, 2002
We all know the famous phrase from Henry VI, Part II, The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. This is often cited as proof that Shakespeare despised lawyers and is often quoted by individuals to show disdain of the services that lawyers offer.
My reading of the play, however, indicates that in the context in which this statement was made, Shakespeare was actually praising lawyers and especially their protection of the individuals property and personal liberty.
Shakespeares play describes the conflict between the House of Lancaster and the House of York, which is known in history as the Wars of the Roses.
Because the House of York believed that it had a better claim to the crown, York decides to stir up a rebellion and in Act III Scene I, he admits that he has seduced a headstrong Kentishman, John Cade of Ashford to make a commotion, as full well he can. The purpose is to start a rebellion and therefore start a war in which York can assert his claim.
In Act IV Scene II, Cade is discussing how they will start the war and begin oppression of the people by taking away their property and individual liberty but his collaborator, by the name of Dick, states that The first thing we do, lets kill all the lawyers. The context in which this is stated is that if you are going to oppress the people you need to kill the lawyers first.

(16,846 posts)Bible quotes and Shakespeare quotes. The same Elizabethan English was used by Shakespeare and the translators of the King James Version, and the KJV was by far the most popular translation for Protestants for many years. In fact, a lot of fundagelicals still claim today that the KJV itself was inspired by God and is the only true translation. I guess we can throw away all those Greek and Aramaic and Hebrew sources. Anyway, dolts like Marsha Blackburn hear a smattering of the Bible in church and Shakespeare in school and they never really know the difference. And she was sent up there to have a very important job making big decisions for our country.

(1,832 posts)Though he was not pinned down for that exact phrase, there are many other quotes like that:
King James Bible:
45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
46 And he said, Woe unto you also, [ye] lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
