(3,605 posts)Their nails can get caught in the metal stairs, and get ripped out. Very dangerous for dogs.

Injuries can be severe and may require amputation
By Stacey Cohen
An escalator can be a dangerous place for your dog. So dangerous, the San Francisco SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has put out a warning, saying the escalator can cause serious injury and in some cases require amputation of a limb.
In the past year the organization has seen injuries on an average of two or three a month. according to Dr. Roger Helmers, a veterinarian at the SPCA who says they seen all kinds of things -- like lacerations to a nail, a toe being torn off and a skin injury from fur catching in an escalator.
Sometimes a whole toe gets torn off and the dog comes to the clinic with a toe already missing.
Seems like the smaller they are the harder they fall and the little dogs get injured more often than the big dogs. More than half require surgery that costs as much as $4,000.

Same thing with moving walkways (that are often found in airports for instance).

(18,624 posts)Maybe there's a reason the support human can't walk up them, but it's no coincidence that someone was on hand to record it.
Still, cute video.

(13,736 posts)The stairs would seem to be a better choice. It would be interesting to get the backstory on this.
Also, I need to confess to a bit of an ulterior motive. A couple of years ago I read a post or an article about the dangers involved with dogs riding escalators and ever since then I've felt obligated to add a little PSA whenever it seems appropriate.

(18,624 posts)Not sure why the stairs were out of the question though.

(14,961 posts)nearby. There was another vid of a guy doing this and they appeared to be in a mall. I don't think, I personally have ever seen a big dog in the mall that wasn't a service dog.

(18,624 posts)Maybe the guy isn't healthy enough to use them, but there's a chance America's Funniest Videos got this before we did. I'm guessing it was staged for whatever reason.
As for a service animal, I doubt that breed would be an initial candidate for the program. Companion dog perhaps.
