This is a broad conspiracy. At the highest levels of government.
Trump didn't give a damn about an investigation into the Bidens. He was driven by a desire to extort the Ukrainian government into *publicly smearing* a private citizen named Joe Biden.
And it has been going on for months and months and months.
Not just one phone call in July. Not just two "quid pro quos" (a term that is itself a terrible messaging problem).
This was a conspiracy to use hundreds of millions of dollars of the public's money to bribe a foreign government into smearing a private citizen who is running for President Trump's job.
A whole heck of a lot of people in the Trump administration either knew about it and were actively participating or they knew about it and were trying to cover their asses.
Trump knew.
Giuliani knew.
Pompeo knew.
Pence knew.
Bolton knew.
Rick Perry knew.
Mulvaney knew.
The White House counsel knew.
State Department diplomats and career NSC staffers knew.
DOD and CIA employees knew.
If I hear the press cover this as "well, Republicans say this but Democrats say that," or pundits talk about a single whitleblower and a single phone call in July, I swear to Christ my head is going to explode.
And while the press pisses me off, the Democrats have failed as well, and I am becoming deeply concerned that they will fumble away their chance to sway 65% of the public that Trump is not just the head of a criminal conspiracy, but that he is a mafioso-like leader who needs to get tossed out on his ass so the SDNY can prosecute the crap out of him and tear down his entire criminal empire.
So yes, the press is doing a terrible job in covering Trump's Ukraine conspiracy, but it is due, in part (though not entirely by any stretch) to the Democrats complete failure at messaging so far.
I am hoping this is all part of a slow build -- because the Democrats also need to come across as even-handed and fair. And I understand that they have to walk a tightrope to get to 65%.
But the Democrats in Congress are not exactly filling me with acres of goddamn confidence yet.
This is the mood I am in as we all prepare to watch public proceedings on impeachment.
