Univ of Florida's student president faces impeachment after bringing D Trump Jr. to campus for $50K

After the University of Florida’s student body president helped bring Donald Trump Jr. and Trump campaign adviser Kimberly Guilfoyle to campus last month to the tune of $50,000, the school’s student government has now moved to impeach him, arguing that the speaking engagement amounted to a misuse of student fees.

On Tuesday, the student body president, Michael Murphy, was served with the impeachment resolution and accused of malfeasance and abuse of power — a development unfolding at the university just as President Trump’s public impeachment hearings begin today on Capitol Hill.

For Trump, the key piece of evidence is his July phone call with the Ukrainian president — but for Murphy it’s an email, a short exchange with a Trump campaign consultant that his critics say is proof of misconduct.

The group of senators seeking Murphy’s impeachment argue that the Oct. 10 speaking engagement for Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle, his girlfriend, was funded with mandatory student fees in violation of rules banning the use of public students funds to support or oppose a “political party at any level.” In the eyes of critics, Murphy’s correspondence with the Trump fundraising consultant ahead of the event bolsters their case that Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle’s appearance was a campaign event.

Gainesville is about as Liberal as it's possible to be in Florida. That was a definite abuse of power.

Pres. Murphy for recovery of Junior's and his squeeze's speaking fees. Any educated group can't learn from those two.

Emails show a Donald Trump re-election campaign official personally asked UF Student Body President Michael Murphy in September to bring Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle to campus the following month.

Caroline Wren, national financial consultant of Trump Victory, the president’s 2020 re-election committee, said she wanted to bring Donald Trump Jr., Kimberly Guilfoyle and Republican National Committee Co-Chair Tommy Hicks to UF either Oct. 9 or 10.

“We met at my house on the 4th of July,” Wren wrote in the Sept. 10 email. “I wanted to follow up with you regarding a speaking engagement at the University of Florida for Donald Trump Jr.”

Murphy responded Sept. 11 saying he’d “love to hop on a phone call” to discuss bringing the three to UF.

Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle spoke Oct. 10 at the University Auditorium to an audience of more than 800 for a $50,000 joint payment, which came from student tuition fees. Hundreds protested outside the venue.

At the same time, Murphy has come under fire for his apparent ties to the Trump family. Photos on social media show him and Emily Dunson, who leads UF’s Gator Party, together at Trump events in Washington, D.C. Campaign finance records show the student president’s father, Dan Murphy, donated $5,600 to Trump’s campaign this year.

Really has been no matter who has been at the top. Sorry to see this happening. The beauty of ACCENT is that they are afforded serious funds to bring out top speakers. I really don't want to see that damaged. "Don't taze me bro" was an ACCENT event.

G’ville is my hometown and I didn’t believe that was something the city would want. Makes me feel better to know it was one POS who pushed for it.
