For lawyers, Jim Jordan just put on a masterclass in how to appear self-impressed and think your questioning is moving the needle while actually looking like a fool and hurting your case. It should be played in law schools as an example of what *not* to do.
On edit:
And this guy is a conservative from Texas. Ouch.

(9,161 posts)He has a JD degree, but he never took the bar exam. At least Pat Robertson took the exam. He failed, but he took it.

(34,055 posts)As to the bar exam - There are a number of graduates every year who choose not to take the bar exam. Some enter law school without any intention to take the bar exam. So merely not taking it isn't particularly shameful (or unusual).

(11,096 posts)Rep. Jordan is clearly not the pride of Capitol University Law School which appears to be a respectable law school for students who want a practical legal education - i.e., those that intend to actually practice law.
I also attended a law school about which few on DU have ever heard. People attend such law schools with the intent to practice law. Graduating from such a law school and then deciding to not take the bar exam is "interesting."

(34,055 posts)but not all.
I'm the bar queen at my school - an equivalent school, so I have had contact wtih each and every graduate since 2013 (and some earlier graduates who are back or a different - or still tring to pass their first - bar exam). I can assure you that there are students in schools like Capitol every year who do not take the bar exam. One of the courses I teach is required for students with lower GPAs, since we believe it is essential to any chance of sucessfully passing the bar exam. Every semester I have had at least one student who has no intention of taking the bar exam. They are not exempt from my class - since there is no guarantee they will not change their mind later.
As a (former) student You are likely unaware of the full spectrum your peers inhabit as to the bar exam. While I've had one student announce (loudly, every chance she got) that she was never going to take the bar exam, so the class was a waste), most don't advertise it.
As for the one who felt compelled to advertise it - she passed the bar exam on her first try 5 years after graduation. She did reach out to me when she changed her mind - not really an apology, but an acknowledgement that people and situations change.

(11,096 posts)Nevertheless, from what I can see of Rep. Jordan's bio, there is no obvious grand scheme for the utility of a legal education in some future that did not include the practice of law. I will concede that I have little regard for Rep. Jordan and that lack of regard forces me to conclude that deciding to not sit for the bar exam was a rare moment of personal insight into his potential.
I have heretofore been convinced that there is no such thing as a useless education. Rep. Jordan makes me question that belief. His graduation with baccalaureate, masters and juris doctorate degrees from respectable institutions seem to have accomplished little in the way of actual education.

(34,055 posts)but the Dunning-Krueger effect is real. Not long ago I met with a student I am quite certain will take at least 3 tries to pass the bar exam - yet who firmly believes that a law school will hire them to teach law.
So I would be at least mildly surprised if a student who was unable to pass the bar exam had the insight to recognize it, especially one with an ego as large as Jordan's obviously is.

(145,046 posts)I am so happy that this idiot is not a member of the bar. Gym went to law school but either did not pass the bar or did not take the exam.
Again, I am so happy that this fool is not a member of the bar

You dont have to be a lawyer to see the obvious.
