(54,378 posts)What Nixon did--and, especially, what he TRIED to do--was NOT small. It was grave, and it was huge. Just because Trump's crimes dwarf Nixon's, that does not mean what Nixon did was small. He knew it, too, or he wouldn't have resigned. That is the major difference between Nixon and Trump. Nixon knew he had stepped way over the line, and saw he wasn't going to get away with it.
Trump vaguely knows he has stepped over the line, but thinks he will get away with it because he has gotten away with EVERYTHING all his life. It is up to the U.S. Congress to put an end to his crime spree, and there is a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate who sees getting away with crimes such as Trump's as something to aspire to.
He will not be removed from office by the Senate. He will either be shamed out of office or he will be voted out of office. If the House Democrats do their job well, he will be shamed out of office, in which case, he will declare he has acomplished more in 4 years than Obama did in eight, declare "my work is done here," and leave the shambles of his administration to Pence. If Pence gets bad advice, he'll run for the presidency. If he gets good advice, he'll head for the most remote corner of Indiana he can find and set up a TV ministry, and live in wealth for the rest of his life because God and Mother wanted him to.
