Ohio Anti-Science Bill

Ohio GOP bill may bar teachers from penalizing students who give creationist answers to questions about evolution.

The bill states that teachers "shall not 'prohibit a student from engaging in religious expression in the completion of homework, artwork, or other written or oral assignments'” and “shall not penalize or reward a student based on the religious content of a student’s work.”

..."this clause could restrict biology teachers from docking points off students who say that the Earth was created just thousands of years ago."

The bill's co-sponsor differs but the bill's text is fairly clear. Could this turn into another 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial if challenged?

As if there’s anything moderate about treating fantasy as fact.

One of the member schools in the college conference of the school both our sons attended is Wheaton College, famous for suing over the birth control provision of the ACA.

On their home page, if flat out states that “We believe that Adam and Eve were the founders of the entire human race.” (Possible slight paraphrase). They have a strong biology program - lab science major, etc. I would love to sit in on one of those classes and ask the professor how Adam and Eve managed to give rise to all human beings without Eve committing incest with her sons.

Answer me that, fundies!

Math students could just make up numbers, just like Fat Donnie does.

Speech students would have a new vocabulary to learn:

And as for physical ed students:

11. So if a kid wrote the following, the teacher would have to give them a passing grade?

"On the first day, the Flying Spaghetti Monster separated the water from the heavens; on the second because He could not tread water for long and had grown tired of flying, He created the land—complemented by a beer volcano.[19] Satisfied, the Flying Spaghetti Monster overindulged in beer from the beer volcano and woke up hungover.[22] Between drunken nights and clumsy afternoons, the Flying Spaghetti Monster produced seas and land (for a second time, accidentally, because he forgot that he created it the day before) along with Heaven and a "midget",[23] which he named Man.[24] Man and an equally short woman lived happily in the Olive Garden of Eden for some time until the Flying Spaghetti Monster caused a global flood in a cooking accident."

If I were a parent there, I would encourage - shit, require - my kid to do something like this!

It was Pastafarians or the earth carried by the world turtle.

Personally, I am a follower of the The Universal Church Triumphant of the Apathetic Agnostic, mostly because I love their motto: "We don't know, and we don't care." I'm thinking of buying one of their tee shirts: https://www.cafepress.com/mf/9797359/uctaa-black_tshirt?shop=uctaa&productId=38991336

Unfortunately, the UCTAA does not have a creation myth since they believe in science, so I had to find another one to use.

...thought Ohio was a decent modern state...

" The bill states that teachers "shall not 'prohibit a student from engaging in religious expression in the completion of homework, artwork, or other written or oral assignments'” "

...when did they drift back into the Middle Ages?

"...the Earth was created just thousands of years ago."

...this doesn't bode well for future scientists and engineers coming from Ohio...

...there's always China...

if the subject is evolution, they can still learn the theory without being required to believe it.

I can learn about what Muslims believe without becoming a Muslim.

This is the mind of right-wingers. They really think that if the kid learns about evolution, he'll believe it. Therefore, the solution is not to be taught about it.
