By The Associated Press 23 minutes ago
Myles Garrett used an opponents helmet as a weapon to hit Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph in the head, an attack played over and over on TV and social media. He was swiftly suspended by the NFL.
The violence unfolded with shocking clarity with seconds remaining in Clevelands 21-7 win over the Steelers on Thursday night.
After Garrett wrapped up Rudolph and took him down with a late, hard tackle, the players tussled on the ground, with Rudolph tugging at Garretts helmet.
Garrett, the massive defensive end, then grabbed Rudolphs black helmet by the facemask and yanked it off while lifting the rookie quarterback off the turf.

(18,122 posts)This goes way beyond a normal NFL hit, or even a dirty one. Just because they are in a game doesn't mean they have free reign to assault people in that way.

(25,532 posts)Easily. Subdural hematoma following massive brain injury. It may as well have been a baseball bat in the hands of a pro athlete of his size and strength. Theyre both very lucky.

(34,136 posts)When I had my back surgery in March, I had a vasovagal syncope (extremely low blood pressure), passed out, and bashed my head on the way down. When the aide found me, I not only had very low blood pressure (something like 30/58) but was bleeding a lot from a wound on my head.
Within a few minutes - as soon as they determined my blood pressure was on the way back up - they sent me for a MRI of my head to make sure I did not have (yet another) concussion (nope, but I bled all over their equipment). Once that was ruled out, they had to test my heart to make sure my replacement aortic valve was not failing.
This was the second vasovagal syncope I'd had following a surgery. I have put it on my list of conditions and things to watch for, because I do not want to pass out again from it.
At least this one was not as dramatic as having a vasovagal syncope after the valve replacement - my heart monitor sent out a code blue to the entire hospital and a few dozen people showed up in the hospital room in response!
The funniest part was when they tried to wrap my head. I have a very round head so their first attempt just slipped right off. Then they tried to wrap it around my head and under my chin, which didn't last much longer. They finally gave up and put an absorbent pad on the pillow and let me bleed into that until the place clotted.

(33,326 posts)That's some scary stuff -- especially the extremely low blood pressure.

(34,136 posts)What I learned is that very low blood pressure can give symptoms you wouldn't expect, such as:
Fainting (syncope)
Blurred vision
Nausea
Fatigue
Lack of concentration

I was really out of it for quite a while. The first time it happened, after the valve replacement, I passed out and then woke back up pretty quickly, without the extremely low blood pressure, at least not that lasted. The second time was pretty major. From now on after an operation, I'm making sure they know about these incidents and get help to avoid them - I hope!

(33,310 posts)given the amount of testosterone and adrenalin coursing through their bodies in these games, breakdowns like this are surprisingly rare.
it happens on the practice field between teammates far more frequently.
Rudolph and 2 linemen are going to see suspensions & fines, too.

(33,310 posts)a year suspension - through this week next season.
Rudolph and the 2 linemen will get dinged, too. One lineman was kicking Garrett in the heads after the helmet swing.
on edit: just saw the indefinite suspension - maybe. there's always Canada!

(3,635 posts)and was simply defending his QB against a despicable act, reacted in the heat of the moment, and should not receive any punishment at all IMO.

(33,310 posts)the full story is as yet unknown - Rudolph was clearly trying to pull Garrett's helmet off 1st.
no justification for any of it.

Colin Kaepernick will be standing and running on a football field Saturday in Atlanta.
More than 24 NFL teams are now expected to have representatives at the free agent quarterbacks workout at the Falcons facility in Flowery Branch, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The NFL arranged the workout to allow teams to evaluate Kaepernick.Ive been in shape and ready for this for 3 years, cant wait to see the head coaches and GMs on Saturday, Kaepernick wrote on Twitter Tuesday. The Falcons plan to have scouts on hand, coach Dan Quinn said earlier this week. The team leaves the facility Saturday afternoon to travel to Charlotte for a game against the Carolina Panthers Sunday. Kaepernick, who guided the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl after the 2012 season, has not played in the NFL since opting out of his contract on March 3, 2017. Kaepernick started a league-wide movement to kneel during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustices and police brutality.
All 32 teams were invited to the private workout which will include an interview, measurements and other quarterback drills. The workout will be recorded and provided to all league teams. The workout is closed to the public and the media.

(8,767 posts)Watched the video clip twice and don't know any of players on either team. Way out of control.
Once was a hard core 49er fan and have got into the habit of watching again after a 12 or so year break from football. Was a 49er fan from going to games at Kezar with parents or youth groups in early 1960s.
It is only a matter of time until American football shrinks in significance because of physical toll and risk of serious injury.

(29,647 posts)Garrett had already been fined more than $50,000 this season, for punching Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker and for a pair of late hits on New York Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian, the second of which knocked Siemian out for the season with an ankle injury.. So he better NOT ever be allowed to play in the NFL again.
