WALLACE Demolishes GOP Talking Point.

WALLACE: "A dozen people listened in on the phone call and a number of them were immediately upset..."

Steve Scalise: "Those were Schiff's witnesses."

WALLACE: "No, sir, they are career foreign service officers and these are people who worked in the Trump administration."

However, as a legal expert, he talks about law, period. Any other hosts on at the time are all shocked, but not being lawyers, can't really dispute, and get over it an back to peddling lies as fast as they can. But this is something new for Wallace and even newer for Baier. Baier got twitter attacked like Tippi Hedren over his comment.I think he's the most vulnerable.

Somebody to uphold the Tim Russert tradition of knowing facts and revealing ignorance, stupidity, and willing rejection of reality. I miss his ability to make an unprepared/ignorant politician or anybody regurgitating talking points look and sound reveal themselves in full, confused, sweating, squirming, embarrassed glory. And it was a wonderful thing to see the really good and capable people who actually did know what they were talking about. Political party didn't matter; if you knew what you were talking about, it showed, and if you were an idiot, you walked away looking like an idiot.

Could Wallace handle it?

Looking back I can remember a Russert interview torpedo the 1990s presidential aspirations of John Kasich, just by circling repeatedly to Kasich's ignorance of whatever he was trying to talking-point his way through. If Todd did that interview, it would have been with deference and minimal mention of how reality differed from talking points. That set the image in my mind: you better be knowledgeable and able to think on your feet. I don't get that from MTP today.

Maybe it is by comparison, but it still seems like now people show up expecting to yammer talking points without being seriously challenged unlike what I remember.

By many. Including me.

I did respect Tim Russert’s work. For a long time. Until I heard how he went to some cocktail party in Georgetown and, when he spoke to a GOP party guest, he briefly opened his jacket wide enough to flash the bush/cheney campaign button he was wearing “under cover”. An attempt at a physical dog whistle, I suspect, to reassure said GOP guest that he was secretly a “friendly.” And this was DURING the 2000 campaign.

When I heard that, I lost all respect for Tim Russert. He even talked about this on the air, snickering and with a devilish grin (“hee-hee-hee! I’m a sneaky little so-&-so, ain’t I!” Chuckle-chuckle wink-wink)

I hadn't heard that assertion about being a secret GOP asset before, so I threw "was Tim Russert a GOP supporter" at Google.

Wikipedia had nothing but Google in turn had an entry from something called Conservapedia

https://www.conservapedia.com/Tim_Russert

I figured a right wing site would maybe mention the cocktail party, but their reference to the GOP support angle is this:

On the liberal side, he is attacked for, as a Democratic Underground (sic) stated, being "...anything BUT an objective journalist."[7]

Didn't find anything else, so far. The link to DU in their references goes nowhere, http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Time%20for%20change/31 , though a RW website might be linking to an alt reality version of DU.

still beloved here, well remembeted, and well respected for his work as a Dem who served in NY politics for Patrick Moynahan and Mario Cuomo, father of our current governor.

I used to love when a guest on his show made a claim that Russert easily disproved with a film clip of the guest. He did that often.

I believe the Russert shows that I watched and his record in NY Dem politics over anything a RW source says about him.

MSNBC. He described going to this cocktail party during election season. And I still remember the devilish grin that took over his face when he described running into some GOP figure and when he believed nobody was looking, opened his jacket to reveal the “secret” bush/cheney campaign button so only his pal could see it. Like fraternity brothers flashing the secret code in a mixed crowd, wink-wink.

I remember feeling my jaw drop.

Okay, there’s currying favor with various sides and sources so they’ll come on your show and they’ll allow you access, but then you portray yourself as objective and not instinctively favoring one side over another?

I watched the interview and couldn’t help noticing that he added nothing along the lines of “and on the inside of my jacket on the other side, I had a Gore/Lieberman campaign pin to flash to friends I knew were gonna be at the same cocktail party who were Democrats. Nothing. He wasn’t doing any stealth “both sides/BOTH SIIIIIIIDES!!!!!” schtick that night.

I can never get around that one whenever Tim Russert’s name comes up. When he died, I watched the lofty, worshipful coverage of his career and what he meant to NBC News and its political coverage over many years of elections and administrations. They all spoke of him in hushed tones. I could not. I couldn’t get that “shhhhhh, don’t tell anybody, but just know I’m one of you (wink-wink)” story outta my mind. Still can’t.

“Schiff’s witnesses?”

As in witnesses for the prosecution? Somehow that’s a problem now?

If they are fact witnesses that prove whether or not there was wrongdoing, why WOULDN’T the committee want to talk to him/her? Just as if there were fact witnesses that prove there WASN’T any wrongdoing they should be hearing from them as well.

But the White House doesn’t want ANYONE speaking with this committee, which is VERY telling. “Illegitimate proceeding” my hairy brown buttocks. If you’ve done nothing wrong, and you have evidence and witness to that end, you should be providing that, Mr. Trump. What you’ve done so far is NOT the behavior of an innocent man, though...

Like I said: the fact that the GOP couldn’t come up with a single FACT witness—and not some conspiracy theorist nut—that could prove Trump’s innocence in all this is very telling.

Too bad the Constition actually PROTECTS him here, or he’d have been carted off to jail weeks ago.
