Stefanik's local paper: EDITORIAL: Stefanik is sacrificing her integrity

Post-Star editorial board Nov 10, 2019

President Donald Trump and U.S. Rep Elise Stefanik appear together at Fort Drum last year for him to sign the John McCain National Defense Authorization Act.

<snip>

She had come to the newspaper earlier that year and expressed confidence the Republican nominee would not be Donald Trump, whom she seemed to hold in low regard.

“I will support the nominee, and I’m sure that will not be Donald Trump,” she said.

Things have changed for Stefanik, who now embraces a bad president to safeguard her job. She no longer gets flustered by tough questions — mostly, she doesn’t give anyone the chance to ask them. Instead, she parrots the Trump line on Fox News and lets her attack-dog spokesman argue with reporters on Twitter.

If her integrity has been sacrificed, that isn’t worth a shrug. She calls for the whistleblower to be outed and avoids talking about the way Trump held military aid to Ukraine hostage to his demand for an investigation of Joe Biden.

She will differ with Trump’s policies here and there. But when it comes to critical questions of presidential character and patriotism and job performance, she is a loyal mouthpiece for Trump’s talking points.

<snip>

It’s not too late for her to choose honesty and honor. But we fear that won’t happen, because she has been going the opposite way, becoming more partisan, more disingenuous and irrational.

Someday, maybe, Elise Stefanik will be far enough removed from the Trump era that, like Paul Ryan, she will admit how bad it all was. But it won’t matter then. Now is the time to speak up. Later will be much too late.

Letter to the editor: Editorial highlighted Stefanik's path
Nov 16, 2019

The editorial board did an excellent job describing our congresswoman’s path toward selling her soul. The high point of the editorial was not in the words, but in the accompanying photo of her speaking at Fort Drum with the president behind her as part of the signing ceremony for the John McCain National Defense Authorization Act. This was on Aug. 13, 2018. Sen. McCain died on Aug. 25. His name was not mentioned, even though it was part of the official name of the new law. That’s okay. The president was banned from McCain’s funeral, a far more memorable event.

My wife Barbara noted correctly that the photo shows the beginning of the congressperson’s quid pro quo. She pushed very hard for the signing to be at Fort Drum, in our 21 CD, and for her to be included in the ceremony. She succeeded, but at great expense to the voters of the district. Her major shift toward full support of the president started right after the ceremony. The Adirondack Park is too sensitive to have a congressperson who is aligned with someone who has no interest in its survival.

..bigots. A party that supports policies that hurt all Americans specifically nonwhite, non Christians, lgbtq, immigrants and refugees; women,the sick, poor:; elderly and disabled..everyone really...a party who frankly doesn't care about her personally and only care about preserving the wealth of the 1%.

El mal [bad, evil, sick] hombre in WH could resign tomorrow and we will still be left with the same ole racist, bigoted, mysogynistic party that we've had for decades. Ps. I'm curious, does the odious racist and traitor in WH tells the cast of gouls [ congressional republikans] that they'll get a monetary bonus if they show their utmost loyalt to him because her [Stefanik]performance was pathetically ridiculous, groveling at his feet type performance and was obviouslly meant for an audience of 1, or individual 1.
