The Sun Will Set In Barrow, Alaska This Afternoon And Won't Rise Again Until 2020

Utqiagvik, Alaska (formally known as Barrow) just plunged into polar darkness that will last the next two months. Today, the sun will set on the city of around 4,300 residents for the final time of 2019. The next dawn will be January 23, 2020. That’s a period of 67 days of total darkness.

Hundreds of miles north of the Arctic Circle, Utqiagvik is the northernmost city in the United States. It’s located 2,000 miles north of Seattle, Washington.

Helps explain why AK didn't fight to have its primary in February like so many others, waiting for April 4. Just looked, and in Utqiagvik April's the first month with average daily temperatures above 0.

mostly aren't allowed to go outside by themselves in winter, even with sun, when temperatures can kill in short order.

Thinking having functional families would be especially important up there, over past centuries to survival itself.

When I was assigned there we had to go thru a psychological profile because some folks from outside would go nuts either dark or light

The 24 hours of daylight can be more disconcerting believe it or not

For one thing the Natives ride their machines around all “night” long and its harder to sleep
