NEWT GINGRICH: I mean, Vindman to me is an absurdity. The idea that somebody who is a lieutenant colonel thinks that he knows so much that he can overrule the commander-in-chief --
LAURA INGRAHAM (HOST): He's quite -- quite full of himself. That's the common --
GINGRICH: People like Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he would currently be serving in Antarctica. Strong presidents make foreign policy. Then they have a State Department to implement their policy.

(46,317 posts)I actually met him once.
He was with his good friend Herb Kohler at the Jan 1rst Polar Bear Club dip in Lake Michigan.
I didn't know he was there, until as I was watching the kooks jumping in the lake, three guys approached me from behind and I heard Newt's very distinctive voice.
Newt laughed at the look on my face, and asked me if I wanted to say anything to him.
I said flat out what I wanted to say to him he would not like one bit, and it would involve a number of profanities.
Herb Kohler got a good laugh, (I do know him, through his late brother Freddie,) and Newt laughed too.

(115,669 posts)claiming tax-exempt status for a college course he taught? Who was reprimanded by the House and ordered to reimburse the House for $300,000 for the costs of the investigation? The Gingrich who shut down the government because he had to use AF1's rear exist? The Newt Gingrich who told his wife (his high school geometry teacher) he was divorcing her while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery, married another woman, then cheated on and later divorced her after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis?
That Newt Gingrich?
That Newt Gingrich isn't fit to shine LTC Vindman's shoes.

Yeah, that Newt Gingrich. The fact he has any credibility whatsoever with Faux wingnuts tells you all you really need to know about Faux wingnuts.

(36 posts)To remind my family members who vote for PUKES because of the perception that theyre pro-military that they are wrong and faulty in their thinking! The de-funded military base infrastructures, the issues veterans struggle with...the list goes on how the GOP use their false military support to garner votes. It makes me sick! I need to put together a talking points list

(101,305 posts)Consider the symptoms: Bouts of grandiosity, megalomania, irritability, impulsiveness, spending sprees
These notes and doodles, handwritten by Newt Gingrich, appear in a series of exhibits appended to a report published on Jan. 17, 1997 by the House Select Committee on Ethics. The notes are mainly from the period leading up to his big 1994 victory. The text at left reads:
GingrichPrimary Mission
Advocate of civilization
definer of civilization
Teacher of the rules of civilization
arouser of those who form civilization
Organizer of the pro-civilization activists
leader (possibly) of the civilizing forces.
These notes were written by someone who appears to be, not to put too fine a point on it, completely bonkers-bananas-barking-batshit loony tunes. (Click here for a slide show of some of the best pages with the warning that Gingrichs handwriting is difficult to read.) There are cosmological renderings, with Newt, as the central System Designer, warming the radiating orbits of his staff, supporters, constituents, and the public. There are crazed lists of things to do, like get more exercise, watch his diet, and "articulate the vision of civilizing humanity and recivilizing all Americans." There are megalomaniacal mission statements like: In order to renew American civilization we need new language to explain our new vision to arouse new human and financial resources to create a new party system so we can defeat the Democratic machine and transform American society into a more productive responsible, safe country

But yeah, Newt, you're the ideal person to consider whether someone else is 'an absurdity'. Or to criticize him for thinking 'he knows so much'.

(42,550 posts)Gingrich, who was the Republican speaker of the House, triggered the shutdown by sending Clinton a bill that he knew he wouldnt sign because it raised Medicare premiums and cut environmental regulations. Clintons veto shut down most of the government between November 14 and 19, and Gingrich hoped Clinton would shoulder most of the blame. But Gingrichs bizarre explanation for why he triggered the shutdown ensured this didnt happen.
When asked about the standoff at a press breakfast on November 15, Gingrich complained about something seemingly unrelated. He said that Clinton hadnt talked to him on an Air Force One trip in early November to attend the funeral for Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. And furthermore, hed had to exit from the back of the plane.
Gingrich said that the fact that the president didnt speak to him during the trip was part of why you ended up with us sending down a tougher interim spending bill. It's petty but I think it's human.
