Putin's puppet, Donald Trump, wanted to be like his daddy Vladdy. He pounced on the new president of Ukraine in the hope of having his own puppet, partially to impress and please Putin, but also to show that he's a powerful dictator, too.
The investigation of the Bidens and 2016 was not as important as having the head of a foreign state announce an investigation. The announcement could be pointed to by Trump over and over for as long as there was no conclusion from the sham investigation. With no actual investigation or conclusions, it would provide fodder for unending right-wing conspiracy theories and incitement.
If Ukraine's President Zelensky had done this one favor for Trump, the next favor would be easier to secure and Trump would have his very own puppet. Trump would no longer be the odd man out in the ring of dictators he so admires.
The whistleblower blew up the wannabe dictator's "perfect" plan. Trump got caught. Is it any wonder he rages about the whistleblower?

(33,342 posts)Trump started his scheme with Poroschenko, who was corrupt to the bone and therefore an easy target. Zelensky was a setback in Dirty Donald's plan, but there was the White House meeting and the military aid to hang over Zelensky's head to try to corrupt him.

(42,770 posts)just wanted to be able to point to it if he ran against Biden. But he got careless and too many people knew about his devious plan. And not everyone was loyal enough to him as he thought.
Personally think we haven't tied the money and greed aspect to this like we should. Trump cares zero about democracy, welfare of the Ukrainian people, or stopping Russian aggresion. Ukraine has untapped natural resources that he and people like Rick Perry want to get their grubby hands on.
And why is trump wanting to defy our intelligence community by shifting blame for 2016 hack from Russia to Ukraine? It started earlier so guess not linked to making Ukraine look more corrupt (justifying his Biden investigation scam). So what else could it be than to please Putin. Why aren't we asking these policy wonks about that?

(33,342 posts)Every mobster 'lieutenant' wants to ingratiate himself to his boss, in addition to grabbing as much money as they can. Trump wants money and power; the suffering of others does not figure into his thinking at all.

(43,181 posts)The incumbent Poroshenko had been fighting them militarily for years so he was obviously of no use to them.
And I don't think Zelensky was a willing Russian asset like Trump or Yanukovych; he was just an actor with no political experience and they hoped he could be pushed around easily.
And it almost worked, if it wasn't for those darn meddling kids.

(42,770 posts)And do whatever. Like thinking he might have scruples because time passed. But it's becoming clear that it took some time for him to figure it out. Do wonder if there was any pause to debate the whole thing. Wish they'd ask that question - did Zelensky ever say "this all sounds fishy"

(22,697 posts)Just like we're not The America. Or The Canada. (I know, I'm being nitpicky, but this always bugs me.)

It took me a while to start leaving off the "the" when speaking of Ukraine.
