Jesus on Wealth
Jesus has plenty to say about the dangers of wealth. In the Sermon on the Mount, he teaches:
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. . . . No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matt. 6:1924)
In Mark 10:1725 Jesus deals with a rich young ruler who wants eternal lifeso long as he isnt asked to sacrifice his great wealth. When Jesus tells him to sell all he has and give it to the poor, hes disheartened. He goes away sorrowful, for he has great possessions.
Jesus goes on to make the unequivocal statement, How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.
: Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ones life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions (Luke 12:1315).
And Jesus cements this warning with a parable:
The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops? And he said, I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:1621)
Paul also warns against an insatiable thirst for wealth:
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. (1 Tim. 6 11)

(36,788 posts)Judas was an early modern day conservative disciple.
Judas got 30 pieces of silver, but just once, for selling Christ.
Pat Robertson, Osteen, and their ilk get millions of dollars repeatedly for selling Christ.
Judas was a fool for doing a one-time sale.

(59,584 posts). . . for both generational and political reasons.
For decades, a majority of Americans have been watching the Megachurch Jesus Money Hour with disgust/amusement as the flock gets fleeced and the chosen fill the arenas.
Now, the Osteens and Falwells and Grahams and rest of the Reality Remoras have hitched their turd-wagon to the dark star of Trump, and what residual amusement that remained in watching them parade their "Christian Values" has devolved into contempt and disgust among the rest of us.
And there's more - what did you see in the Osteen clip when the camera cut to the crowd? What you see (for the most part) in all such shows - white people 50 and older praising Gaw-duh for all the money and cars and houses and vacation time shares their faith in Him has brought them, while God's Trained Seal barks at them for more money, more money, more money.
Americans in their 30s and younger are confronting their relative poverty compared to their older compatriots - health care costs, student debt that can never be discharged, McJobs w/o benefits, "just-in-time" contingent scheduling and all the rest. They're also confronting the reality of a mutilated, diminished and permanently destabilized world that global warming is busily cooking up, a world in which even more assumptions about their lives will fly out the window.
And then they see "Prosperity Gospel" in action - the faces of those who created this world, bristling with self-righteousness, smoothed with unfounded faith and happy to let the rest of the world go to hell. After all, they're favored and saved and rich.
No wonder megachurches are in trouble. No wonder "Prosperity Gospel" is starting to falter.
No wonder atheism/agnosticism is growing. Not quickly enough, but it's a start.
