Connections, connections...

My daughters were both born here in Germany and grew up here. As dual citizens, they can choose to live and work in either Germany or the USA. One is now living in Manhattan, and the other, who went to law school in New York, is now working for the Frankfurt am Main branch of a New York law firm.

The one in Manhattan texted the one in Germany yesterday her excitement over the news that Michael Bloomberg is now a candidate for President. I didn't know that she even knew who Bloomberg was. The one in Frankfurt texted back, "oh, he called (a client of hers) and told him that months ago."

Once upon a time, I used to be considered "in the loop" about things like this. I must have been put out to pasture when I wasn't looking!

So the name Bloomberg wouldn't have meant anything to her except as some rich American friend of some rich German she knows.
The older one at least knew who he was.

That is more a theme for the primaries board discussion. and that board is not my "thing." I look, but keep my flak jacket on, and then head for more temperate climes. A board where half the posts consist of (ostensibly) Democrats tearing down the preferred candidate of other Democrats is a board that will surely survive nicely without my irksome presence.

From feedback I'm getting in the States currently, your scenario is not going to happen, but things could change a hundred times between now and the convention. There are powerful interests that would love nothing better than the Democratic candidates tearing each other apart and sending a weakened candidate into the November election. It's up to us as a party to not let the "my way or no way" crowd monopolize the dialogue.

I just found it interesting that someone in Germany knew MONTHS before any of us did about the entry of a self-funded candidate on the Democratic side. I can only imagine that since he knew he was talking to a German, totally unconnected with the American political scene, that the guy wouldn't leak it to the media--which he indeed did not. He only told my daughter this when she mentioned what her sister had said.

Bloomberg only ran for mayor of New York as a Republican after failing to secure the nomination as a Democrat. He was never a right wing nut case. If his politics seem to mirror those of Biden, he'll still have to furnish some solid reasons why the real Biden shouldn't be nominated. I'd be amazed if he was to be seriously contemplated as VP on a Biden ticket, since he is a straight East Coast white man who doesn't bring a lot of diversity to the ticket. On the other hand, I think he'd accept it if offered, since if Biden wins the presidency, his VP almost certainly becomes the nominee in four years. My instinct tells me that if nominated, Biden would opt for Amy Klobuchar instead--geographical diversity, gender diversity, and a known quantity from the Senate. But, again, he would first have to sew up the nomination before even getting to contemplate a running mate, and he's a long way from there.
