Edward Gallagher was accused of shooting civilians, killing a teenage Isis captive and threatening to kill any colleagues who reported him, but was acquitted at a court martial.
However, he was demoted after being convicted on one charge, of bringing discredit on the armed forces after posing for a picture with the body of the dead teenager.

(1,945 posts)Another soldier that was there suffocated him in what he said was a mercy killing. And this soldier testified at Gallaghers trial that he himself had killed the boy. (I think this was the story, or something close to it)
I can't imagine how the things that Gallagher did were not enough to convict him.

If all of this is true, he barely got a slap on the wrist. How many more war criminals are out there that the military let off so easily.

(8,818 posts)Maybe the Hague will have something to say about it: "International War Crimes" comes to mind............I don't know if they can try someone in absentia? I think it is called..........
Someone told me the U.N. and the Hague are working overtime trying to finish preparing their case against Asad? of Syria on the same charges for dropping chemical weapons on his own people many times over the past several years........It was the easiest method to get rid of his opposition.....Of course he didn't manufacture the weapons and was supplied with them from a certain country......

(47,419 posts)But the U.S. usually gets a pass on this kind of stuff. Look at all the crap that took place during the Bush years.

(8,818 posts)told me that Cheney & Rumsfeld can never set foot in any country in most of Europe. They would be arrested and transported directly to the Hague to be put on trial for International War Crimes...........

(47,419 posts)That entire administration (except for Libby) got a pass, but because Trump is so horrible, people think maybe Bush wasn't so bad. Unfortunately a lot of memories tend to fade. However, he WAS every bit as bad as we thought he was and hundreds of thousands of people died because of his reckless cowboy policies. I never thought I'd see a president who was worse.

(99 posts)that are captured in war. To the eyes of the world and any future adversaries, the message is that, not only do US troops commit war crimes, not only are they not prosecuted and convicted for it, but the f***ng President comes out and PARDONS them; the worst of them. A pardon in the case of an atrocity like this is so bizarre, so extreme, that it will be seen as much more than a pardon; it will be seen as Presidential praise and endorsement. To the eyes of the world, who are certainly watching reports of this, this will be seen as the definition of what it means to be a US solider today.
Not only is it a gross dishonor to the decent men and women who have worn the uniform, but the next time some poor soldier gets captured, there will be no Geneva Convention niceties and we will be looking on with horror as something like this is done to him in revenge. And the whole world sinks deeper and deeper into a vicious cycle of inhumanity, into the abyss from which it took the human race so many painful lessons, so many years, so much careful work and diplomacy to climb out of.
This is what it looks like when norms collapse. It is beyond dispiriting.

(15,286 posts)on the stand, iirc. He initially told prosecutor's the stab wound Gallagher inflected killed the ISIS fighter, but on thes stand, he said it wasn't a mortal wound. It threw the prosecution's whole case off track.
In any event, Gallagher will be allowed to retire and keep his "Seal pin" although it's a pyrrhic victory as the medal has no value when associated with him.

Gallagher's unit reported his dishonorable behavior. This is setting a bad precedent that you can commit war crimes as long as you have the President personally backing you.

He probably identifies with them and thinks that by protecting them he can become like them and never be held accountable. It really all still boils down to being about him.
Im sure hes already picked out the perfect job for Gallagher when he becomes Dictator Trump. Maybe the CEO of a concentration camp with people who stand behind him in his rallies as Gallaghers staff.

(11,088 posts)from the military entirely for committing war crimes in a training environment. The rationale is: If you are willing to do it in training, who says you wont do it in real life?
Gallagher was court martialed and the only thing saving his ass from life in prison or death is that he was a Trump supporting vile piece of shit.
