(58,785 posts)Come on. This is so outrageous that no one should have just put the worst interpretation on the headline and run with it. Not unless it's from Trump anyway. With him anything is possible.
Btw, if anything, conservatives are naturally even more punitive toward child rapists than we are; without us in the mix, I'm guessing it's unlikely any would live long.

(39,720 posts)In his pardon and commutation order on Friday, Bevin wrote that Paul Donel Hurt had been wrongly convicted in Jefferson County in 2001 of three counts of sodomy in the first degree and two counts of sexual abuse in the first degree.
"Hindsight is never truly 20/20, but it appears to me, and to many others including the judge who sentenced him, that Paul Donel Hurt has been wrongly convicted and imprisoned for nearly 20 years," Bevin wrote.
In 2015, Hurt's accuser recanted her testimony in an evidentiary hearing. However, the trial court did not set aside the conviction, with the Jefferson Circuit Judge Audra Jean Eckerle ruling that her recantation was an inconsistent, "shifting account" that was "no more likely to be true than false."

UPDATE: Judge Mershon was the judge when Hurt was convicted in 2001, and he tells me he drove Hurt home from jail Friday after the pardon: "I believe an innocent man is now free... Bevin did the right thing."

(53,410 posts)there are still questions lingering about whether the judge influenced her.
As much as part of me believes this story the facts are more important.

He could be innocent, it's tough to tell.

(2,253 posts)Bevin pardoned someone that was convicted of sodomizing his 6 yr old stepdaughter.
The girl that he was convicted of abusing recanted her testimony. The Judge that presided in the trial advocated for the pardon. The prosecutor, while not agreeing to support the pardon, chose not to argue against it.
The guy that got pardoned might have committed the crime, and he might not have.
Bevin's a piece of shit, regardless of the facts in this particular case.
However, I don't it's a good idea to intentionally fail to distinguish between someone being convicted of a particular crime, and someone having committed that particular crime...Especially when the article made a point to make that distinction.
