From White House pool reporter Hunter Walker of Yahoo News:
A White House official confirmed to your pooler on background that Conan the dog is female. The president used male pronouns to identify the dog during the earlier event. Your pooler retracts the earlier comment that Conan was a very good boy. Conan is apparently a very good girl. Good girl Conan.

(35,300 posts)I'd also say that the general default is if you don't know the sex of a dog, you call it "him." If there's a correction, then you make the correction. In languages with grammatical expression of sex and/or agreement classes, there must be default settings. Hungarian, no problem--but you use sexed terms to refer to people when you need or want to. When sexed lexical items and pronouns clash, as they sometimes do, speakers and language have different ways of resolving the problem. Spanish has some, Russian has others, languages with 3 or 5 or 10 "genders" have their own. One language I looked at arguably has something like two dozen agreement classes, something in the Caucasus, if I remember correctly, or maybe sub-Saharan Africa.
