Navy says review board will not look at case of SEAL Eddie Gallagher, who will retire

Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher, whose demotion for posing for a photo with a combatant's corpse was reversed by President Donald Trump, will retire and a planned review of his status has been canceled, the Navy announced late Monday.

"He will retire from active duty," Navy Cdr. Clay Doss said in a statement. "We will not provide additional details due to privacy concerns."

The announcement marked the formal end of the review, which could have led to Gallagher's expulsion from the elite special operations SEAL group, after Trump issued an order to Defense Secretary Mark Esper that Gallagher be allowed to keep his Trident pin symbolizing his SEAL membership.

"The case of Eddie Gallagher has dragged on for months, and it's distracting too many. It must end," Esper told reporters at the Pentagon on Monday. "Eddie Gallagher will retain his Trident as the commander in chief directed, and will retire at the end of this month."

Probably just as well as he wouldn't be accepted by his fellow sailors. Still he gets to draw his pension which I don't believe he would have been able to do if he wasn't pardoned by Drumpf.

A lot of employees of retirement age when they hit some problem that properly would lead to termination are merely allowed to retire. It spares everybody effort and gets rid of the problem quickly. It often serves a greater good, in that if the retiree has a family they're not suddenly destitute at retirement age.

The only time I've ever seen somebody fire somebody and disallow retirement are cases like Comey, where he was fired just before he was scheduled to retire (losing part, but far from all, of his pension) and where there was some outside circumstance that made termination and not retirement necessary. (Not "preferred," not "face saving," but either they terminated the guy or there'd be no consequence at all because he wasn't going anywhere.)

In the case of Gallagher people want to punish him for what he was accused of, not what he was found guilty of, on the premise that if we punish our own then our own guys, when captured by ISIS and their ilk, will treat them nicely. ISIS follows its own drummer, though. It beheads those it wants to behead for PR, it executes those it doesn't want to screw with, it holds as hostages those it thinks can be used as goods for barter. ISIS don't care.

Does that mean he's not going to get any more taxpayer dollars? Or are we supposed to just keep paying Eddie without any accountability at all? How very Trumpian.

Trump picked Gallagher to stand up for specifically because he knows he's a psychopathic monster. He's the worst of the worst, Trump wants Dems to attack him so he can say, "Look, they hate the troops, and I love the troops."

We know Gallagher is an animal, but the Right will never believe any of it.

Hopefully, the best he might get (for him) is an Admin Discharge, not that it won't hurt him at all hiring on with Thugmaster Eric Prince or some other Merc for Hire organization. My hope will be for Other than Honorable, but the Dumpster Fire in Chief must be appeased...
Not smart enough for an actual leadership position, but certainly good enough to work under a Capo running a cadre of "made men".

The White house, Senate, The Courts, Law Enforcement is filled with Trump's goons and soon the Armed Forces will be filled with them too. No one like General James Mattis or Rear Admiral William C. Greene will be around to oppose Trumps orders. If shit hits the fan and Trump starts a real Civil War people still think the Police and Army will still be on our side? A good chunk will, but if majority of those forces are comprised of Trump supporters they won't be able to do much to help us. We really need to win 2020 or we will be looking at a very bad future for Democrats.
