The United Nations has an alarming assessment of climate change and how countries around the world are not doing nearly enough to slow its damage before it becomes worse. The report finds that the warming effect of greenhouse gases on the planet has increased 43 percent just since 1990. Columbia Universitys Dr. Radley Horton joins Judy Woodruff to discuss the problem and potential solutions.

And... I may be petty but I could not help, while watching this story, thinking about this ad running second (or third) year in a row, about how a man buys two gas guzzlers GMC trucks "one for you and one for me" and she "loves it."

(156,968 posts)It is so alarming that it disturbed my sleep this morning.
It's like a world-wide war that nobody is paying any attention to.
The only thing that scares me more is tRump.

(18,690 posts)What's so frustrating is that Climate is THE issue of our time and first we have to fight this exhausting battle to get rid of this president, and he's only one obstacle. In our country, but also in Australia and other major nations the leaders are preventing us from even trying to save ourselves and our fellow creatures. It's horrible.

(7,400 posts)Currently a million species are threatened with extinction. This is only a surprise because the media has tried to balance deniers with scientists who know.

(12,745 posts)Humans currently don't give a rat about that because we keep talking about destroying the planet - as if it's a separate thing from humans. It isn't.
This entire debate needs to be framed in terms of saving HUMANITY - humans, not the planet. Because frankly humans don't care about other animals or the planet. They mostly stupidly believe it's all separate from themselves and it isn't.
Humanity's survival as a species is intricately tied to the survival of all other species. How often do you hear that in the media? Or Presidential debates?
NEVER.
It's being framed wrong.
Of course saving the human race involves saving the planet and other species but that has to be treated as secondary before people will even begin to grok the problem.
Humans are dumb bunch. Especially the Jesus freak evangelicals and the Trump cult.

(7,400 posts)Everything will be ok until Jan 1, 2100. when the sea levels will rise a bit. And most species will become extinct but not humans. Our hubris surely will save us.
I blame both media and reticent scientists afraid of appearing alarmist and/or losing their funding.
