The real reason Trump took Gallagher's review away from the SEALs

It's not because Fox News has Trump's ear like CNN just said. Trump doesn't just listen to Fox News. Trump and Fox News collaborate with one another. Trump has as much influence over Fox News as a managing editor.

Trump pre-empted the decision by the SEALs to shut them up. The review that Trump snatched from the SEALs would have been led by the SEALs. Trump knew that he and Fox News would be humiliated if the SEALs decided to toss Gallagher by taking his trident. Therefore, Trump took the right of the SEALs to police themselves away from them, humiliating the SEALs and the Navy in general.

Trump did this for himself and for Fox News. He could have waited for the SEALs to make the decision themselves about who should and who should not be worthy to call themselves a SEAL. He didn't because he couldn't.

Trump and Fox News had been backing Gallagher. The SEALs disciplining Gallagher by taking his trident would have been a campaign issue against Trump and a slap in the face to Fox News. Trump couldn't have that. The SEALs and the Navy were subjected to humiliation to save face for Trump and Fox News.

Gallagher's lawyer works for the Trump organization so either it was a favour or to keep him from spilling the beans to investigators. Trump only does things for himself personally. He will help Putin as well but I doubt that Putin directed this. The relationship with the lawyer is very telling.
