Paige Guidice, Gillen marriage) and their theory about American democracy on the road out. I haven't read much of it, but they do have a few neat new names for things and are sure we are doomed.

Yeah, things don't look good but when have they ever looked good?

When the robber barons and Pinkertons tried to take over everything and destroy the labor they depended upon?

The Dust Bowl?

The second and third Great Awakenings? (The first was before we were a country)

The Progressive Party and the battles between the agricultural Great Plains and the industrial northeast?

These were all times the nation was on the verge of splitting apart again, but they are not all of them.

Look up Bleeding Kansas and see just how intense things were between slavery and abolition. That btw, is the only thing on this list prior to the Civil War, but pretty well presaged it.

Reagan, and others around the world, was frustrated with the inefficiencies of democracy, so with Gingrich we saw the Contract With America and the attempted destruction of American politics as we had known it.

The difference now is that trmp doesn't have half of Gingrich's brains nor Reagan's folksy popularity. And, as bad as things are getting, that' a good thing.
