Exclusive: Soon after Jeffrey Epstein died, a mysterious man came forward. He said he had CCTV footage from Epstein's homes. He said it showed powerful men having sex and that Epstein used it for blackmail.

The man went by a pseudonym, Patrick Kessler. He showed us what he said were video stills of men — including Alan Dershowitz and Ehud Barak — having sex in Epstein’s properties. He said he wanted justice for their victims.

Images deliberately blurred.

That might have been the end, but Kessler also went to two lawyers, David Boies and Stan Pottinger. They told @nytimes they hoped to use his supposed videos to win settlements from men who appeared on them.

A lawyer drew up a list of possible targets: "I call it our hot list.”

The idea was that any money from those settlements would flow to a foundation — and to lawyers, according to text messages obtained by @nytimes

The deals probably would have kept the videos — some supposedly showed men raping children — secret.

Was this ethical?

David Boies told us he would only seek settlements on behalf of clients with valid claims. Not extortion.

Stan Pottinger, who wrote the text messages we obtained, said he had been lying to Kessler and never intended to do what he said he would.

This saga is the subject of a special hourlong episode of @TheWeekly, airing on @FXNetworks on Sunday night at 10pm. It will stream on @hulu starting Monday.

You can see the lawyers and Kessler explaining what happened in their own words.

Soon after the sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein died in August, a mysterious man met with two prominent lawyers.

Towering, barrel-chested and wild-bearded, he was a prodigious drinker and often wore flip-flops. He went by a pseudonym, Patrick Kessler — a necessity, he said, given the shadowy, dangerous world that he inhabited.

He told the lawyers he had something incendiary: a vast archive of Mr. Epstein’s data, stored on encrypted servers overseas. He said he had years of the financier’s communications and financial records — as well as thousands of hours of footage from hidden cameras in the bedrooms of Mr. Epstein’s properties. The videos, Kessler said, captured some of the world’s richest, most powerful men in compromising sexual situations — even in the act of rape.

Watch “The Weekly,” The Times’s new TV show on FX and Hulu

A mysterious man told us he had surveillance footage from Jeffrey Epstein’s properties. Then his story took a turn.

Kessler said he wanted to expose these men. If he was telling the truth, his trove could answer one of the Epstein saga’s most baffling questions: How did a college dropout and high school math teacher amass a purported nine-figure fortune? One persistent but unproven theory was that he ran a sprawling blackmail operation. That would explain why moguls, scientists, political leaders and a royal stayed loyal to him, in some cases even after he first went to jail.

Kessler’s tale was enough to hook the two lawyers, the famed litigator David Boies and his friend John Stanley Pottinger. If Kessler was authentic, his videos would arm them with immense leverage over some very important people.

Mr. Boies and Mr. Pottinger discussed a plan. They could use the supposed footage in litigation or to try to reach deals with men who appeared in it, with money flowing into a charitable foundation. In encrypted chats with Kessler, Mr. Pottinger referred to a roster of potential targets as the “hot list.” He described hypothetical plans in which the lawyers would pocket up to 40 percent of the settlements and could extract money from wealthy men by flipping from representing victims to representing their alleged abusers.

The possibilities were tantalizing — and extended beyond vindicating victims. Mr. Pottinger saw a chance to supercharge his law practice. For Mr. Boies, there was a shot at redemption, after years of criticism for his work on behalf of Theranos and Harvey Weinstein.

In the end, there would be no damning videos, no funds pouring into a new foundation. Mr. Boies and Mr. Pottinger would go from toasting Kessler as their “whistle-blower” and “informant” to torching him as a “fraudster” and a “spy.”

Kessler was a liar, and he wouldn’t expose any sexual abuse. But he would reveal something else: The extraordinary, at times deceitful measures elite lawyers deployed in an effort to get evidence that could be used to win lucrative settlements — and keep misconduct hidden, allowing perpetrators to abuse again.

Instead of outing the child rapists, they seek to profit off the rape of children. I just want to hear one more time how rape culture does not exist.

Just wondering now that we've heard that Epstein might have been murdered and we've heard the guards at the jail were asleep.

i tend to be a little skeptical about the obvious connection of pedos and power. i dont know how much is cause and how much is correlation, but the connection is undeniable.

but this here shit, where these people get away w it, and they are in a conspiracy of silence, yeah, lots of bad shit goes down in that world.

Than the film by Nicholas cage......was it "8 mm" he probably needed psychotherapy after filming that movie. Along with the rest of the cast and all involved in filming and production of that movie on the horrific world that is out there........

I am not particularly fond of the death sentence, but any cho-mo should be at least removed from society for life with no chance of parole. The experts know, without a doubt, that there is no cure and if released after whatever amount of their sentence they will absolutely become repeat offenders, no question what-so-ever.......

Considering the extremely powerful men and extremely rich men who were the perps in this massive child molestation group, I reckon that any info, videos, records will never see the light of day. I think it is ridiculous to even think Epstein's suicide was self inflicted. I mean it is a possibility as he was about to face the reality of his crimes and did himself in, but there were alot of money and power clients, and I mean hundreds probably, that would put out hits on him and pay handsome fees to have it done. I can only imagine the number of clients, and the positions they hold in society that this information would show. Politicians, Judges, Uber rich, Royalty, Heads of countries, Heads of states, famous actors, etc etc etc.

Did anyone ever get Heidi Fleis's black book on the rich and shameless?????? And at least that was just prostitution.......

Any person capable of destroying this investigation and all records video or otherwise, could name his/her price. Of course he/she would have to keep some of the records in a secret location as insurance to make sure the culprits didn't take him/her out just to cover their tracks......

And who would you turn the info over to if you wanted to see all these sicko people taken down. Certainly not our infamous DOJ/Barr. Probably not even the higher ups in the FBI. Forget any judges or supremes, hell some of them or at least their associates are probably on the tapes if they exist. Major newspapers, you wouldn't want to trust them, considering most of the TV, Radio, Newspapers are owned by well connected Republicans.......Maybe the press in another major country? But then when they reviewed the tapes and info they might find some of the people are high up politicians or rich people in their country.

Powerful men, dignitaries and Princes do not enter and leave the USA without security agencies knowing about it.
Private planes do not fly around Miami and offshore without scrutiny.
Epsteins incredible ability to function as pimp to the rich and powerful without anybody noticing defies belief.
The apparent ease that he passed through the justice system, the improprieties, the remarkable terms of his sentence make no sense.

The most obvious way that all this could have happened would be if he wasn't operating for himself, but rather, being used to gather intelligence on powerful people. All the tapes or pictures may have gone direct to a security agency rather than allowing Epstein to cause trouble with them.

The set up throws up some of the same questions as the MP paedophile ring in the U.K., where it appears MPs were recruited because of their deviancy, not inspire of it, or by accident.

Would the US do something like this? Yes.

You make one recording of a powerful person committing a heinous crime, who isn't too bright, like Trump, then you have a blackmail. Recordings of several powerful people and try to blackmail them, your private plane is going to crash in the ocean or you suddenly have a heart attack/stroke.

Epstein was high paid pimp and was scared shitless. If he started giving up names, he was a dead man. But if he kept quiet, he was looking at a lifetime in prison and his luxurious lifestyle was gone for good....it probably pained him. So he took the easy way out.

Slimeball represented SCO in frivolous lawsuits against IBM, Autozone, Suse, Redhat, Daimler-Chrysler, Novell. Lots of corporate users of Linux threatened, some capitulated and paid "license" fees to use Unix. 7 years of litigation for a semicolon, because Microsoft wanted to slow down Linux use. Deutsche Bank involved in that shit, too. Bankruptcy left all the victims with nothing but costs. Jury verdict was simple and what everybody knew from the start -- SCO never owned the copyrights it sued over.

as soon as word got out of its existence, high-level international security agencies would search and find it fairly quickly. You can't hide shit from those people.

So, I would bet a government agency somewhere has found and copied any trove of incriminating evidence on Epstein but we'll probably never know.

Governments keep a lot of goodies hidden away for hard times that never see daylight....
