(6,254 posts)A friend of mine told me when Trump won it was Gods plan. I never understood that until I saw Rick Perry in this interview. They really believe God put Trump there for a reason. Perry said it was Gods plan that Obama was President. I wonder if they would still say that if Mayor Pete wins.

(14,491 posts)After my "enlightenment" in my 40s, it hit me strange about a god being a "him" (not meaning to pick on you here at all).
If one were to believe in a massively powerful, controlling being in our universe, why would any rational being think it would have human-like sex characteristics, show prejudice or favoritism toward any living thing, believe it communicates only with some select humans, or even recognize our very existence at all? Our solar system is but a grain of sand in the universe, at best - relative to all the grains of sand on earth.
One tiny element (of many) in my wake-up process was when I read that Sigmund Freud said (paraphrasing) the minute our ancestors first stood up on two legs and became a little self-aware, we started inventing gods to help cope with the realities of life. We're still inventing, modifying and defining them to fit our needs to this day.

(1,639 posts). . . was one step higher than believing in Zeus--who not only had human-like sex characteristics, but also had sex with humans. Maybe people felt relieved because Biblegod only had sorta-kinda sex with one woman.

(22,480 posts)But I will also that if his DEMON (yea that's the word I'm choosing to use) in the White House continue to wake up a whole lot of people to what is really important and causes a true big blue wave then maybe he has been chosen by God. We'll see in a couple years. If the country turns blue then Donald Trump will have made America great again.

There are people who believe Trump will leave office, one way or another, in July 2020. I'm an atheist, but it would be interesting if that came to pass.

(6,395 posts)They twisted them into a pretzel trying to prove Obama wasn't a Christian. But with clear evidence Trump's only religion is himself, they twist themselves into a pretzel trying to profess he is a Christian.
I liken it to the "beggar paradox". Republican helps out at the food bank that gives out to beggars and illegal immigrants. After he's done, he goes to the store and a beggar asks for food, which he then screams at him to get a job. Then goes home and turns on Fox News and starts raging against the immigrants taking away jobs.

I realize that the kind of comparison I am going to make is often overused, but this is a perfect match for how Nazi leadership portrayed Adolf to the people. "God on our side" is a perfect excuse for any action, no matter how atrocious.
When we think of Nazi Germany, we immediately think of the Holocaust and shy away from making comparisons to anything so horrible. In doing that, we remain ignorant of how it started and built up to the nightmare that it became. We should look more at the early years of that period to see how the later years were possible. An ounce of prevention.......
