Just got back from DragonCon and was hit by a few things in both fantasy and science fiction festivals.
There was no political discussion.
There was an overwhelming acceptance of EVERYONE.
There were many LBGT couples there that were not only accepted but loved by the crowds.
There was an undisclosed idea and feeling that all people are beautiful. Even in their zombie make up.
There were men holding hands with men and likewise with women. Interracial couples. Interspecies couples (furries) and a majority of heteros.
The coolest thing was is that we all embraced each other.
There seemed to be tens of thousands there that put off their political beliefs just for a moment for a shared love that transcended any politics and didn't care about another's political or religious beliefs. It brought people together in that Fantasy And Science Fiction seem to lean towards a very Liberal thought set that includes all and disdains the bad actions towards the poor and disenfranchised.
Okay, that's it for my first diddly in this wonderful site. Sorry it's not about the convention.

(15,222 posts)There is, more than often, a political slant in good sci-fi and fantasy writing
but it can rely on the willingness of the reader to suspend reality
or, as I like to think, place your mind in a higher plane.
Sounds like fun, glad you had a good time.
Here you go on DU...post more.

(115,186 posts)no overt politics on display, but the indications there were all strongly representative of the left.
Welcome to DU.

(2,866 posts)This Con was spread about five hotels in downtown Atlanta and my legs are still sore from walking to and from events which amounted to tens of miles while carrying tens of pounds of photo equipment. But very much agree with you.

(2,164 posts)Earlier this year I went to WonderCon in Anaheim CA, with friends that are veteran ComicCon attendees. This was a 'smallish' Con, as it was a temporary site while it's usual venue in San Francisco is being renovated. But, as it was my first convention, to me it was still pretty crowded. I noticed and remarked to my friends that everyone was so polite and friendly. Since there were a lot of people crammed into the aisles, with their bags of swag and costumes, etc, there was a lot of bumping into each other, or standing several deep while trying to look at things. It stood out to me, that by far the majority would say, 'oh, excuse me' or 'sorry' or the like if they bumped against you, or hit you with a backpack full of goodies as they turned around. My friends said that has been their experience at ComicCon too.
I think you're right, everyone is in such a happy place mentally that their behavior reflects that, and they treat each other with more kindness and acceptance than you might find in 'normal' life. Or maybe us 'nerds' are just nicer by nature?

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
