In the clip, introduced by New Day host John Berman, correspondent Vanessa Yurkevich began, Farmers have had a tough couple of years between bad weather and this trade war that has persisted. Nationally, farm bankruptcies are up 20 percent in just the last year and, here, dairy farms in Pennsylvania are dwindling. We spoke to some farmers who supported the president but say theyre rethinking their vote for 2020.
Introducing dairy owner Bill Boyd of Mount Bethel, she asked, Is the dairy business profitable?
Just like everything else in agriculture right now, barely profitable, he replied.
I think hes sort of back-stabbing the main people who got him into office in the Midwest, all those midwest states helped to vote him in and also Pennsylvania, Boyd explained. He just left us out.
Despite that, when asked if he would vote for Trump in 2020, Boyd conceded, Unless they come up with a better alternative, Im going to vote for him again.

(14,603 posts)These guys stand there in faded work clothes and give the impression theh are a small family farm struggling.
Bs. Those farms are long gone. I worked on one in the 70s. 60 cows and 150 acres in upstate ny. That farm, and almost every other one its size either became subdivisions or were picked up at auction by megafarms.
Sure, there are some boutique or gentleman farmer farms out there, but the norm now is thousands of heads on a factory farm.
These guys are multi millionares. They made winfalls with the tax cuts and estate tax changes.
Struggling to them is only making millions.
Small farms are still giants. That is why this guy is voting for trump.
Kali
(55,002 posts)lots of single family farms out there still, and struggling to hang on. even the bigger ones have been screwed by dumps trade war. what makes many of them "millionaires" is the land base. they are NOT rich. they wont ever see that cash unless they sell out, either to developers or the mega farms.
getagrip_already
(14,603 posts)You could say Dell is a single family business once theh went private. Sure a lot of creditors, but one owner.
So single family farms can actually be quite large.
Sure, they have debt, but they arent small.
And yes, many of the large but not super large farms are struggling. Some may even decide to sell out.
But the number of truly small family farms is very small and rapidly shrinking. And that has little to do with trump, but he isnt helping any.
Kali
(55,002 posts)and so is my neighbor's small 100 pair operation being called a corporation because that is how he organized his business. hard to define what is small, but for me it means an operation that is the primary income for a family, usually supplemented with one or more off-farm jobs but not in the realm of a hobby.
getagrip_already
(14,603 posts)These are 24x7x365 operations. Cows need to be milked and fed twice a day. Every day. At any given point, some will be sick or ill. Calves are born frequently. Manure needs to hauled. Feed needs to be hauled. Crops need to be grown and harvested for winter.
Costs are high and margins are paper thin. The only answer is volume, but small farms are limited.
That means no holidays or vacations unless you have someone you trust. Once your kids move on, it quickly falls apart.
Small farms with only a husband and wife are not sustainable. And so farms with less than 1000 heads are few and usually focus on organic markets or cheese. But markets are limited, so it isnt an answer for all.
Grain farmers at least have an off season. Automation helps them. Not so much for dairy farmers.

(10,114 posts)All of these stories have the same ending.
If these folks don't see that a blown out flip flop would make a better president than *45, they are a lost cause. I'm done with thinking there are cracks in that glass. They are just stupid, and it can't be fixed or reasoned with. GOTV is the only answer.
I had a friend post on Facebook some nonsense about how some people are feeling marginalized and left out, and condemning progressive elites for mocking them, talking down to them, and steamrolling them. He then went on about some minor faults of conservatives, and concluded with how we all need to come together.
After leaving the post alone (why go looking for trouble), the post kept jumping up my feed because people were complimenting him on his noble "can't we all just get along" sentiment. I finally responded that I'd like some clarification of who he thinks are progressive elites and could he favor us with some examples of those elites treating marginalized people badly. He manfully turtled and declined to explain himself further, saying he didn't want people squaring off.
This guy is an example of someone, I'm confident, he would cite as being mocked or steamrolled by progressive elites. In spite of everything that's gone wrong for him personally, Bill Boyd is going to vote for Trump again. This just goes beyond parody; my friend wants peace, love and understanding for people like Boyd.
I hid my friend's post.

(82,849 posts)I'm not trying to start a fight, particularly with a friend, and particularly over a Facebook post, but I am resolved to push back ever so slightly to find out who these elites are and what specifically they're saying or doing that is so disrespectful. It's easy enough to whine and moan about being treated unfairly, but I suspect the actual incident behind the whine is nothing quite so dire.

(81,375 posts)Trump's farm bailout has cost taxpayers more than double the auto bailout
John Gallagher, Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 a.m. ET Sept. 24, 2019
President Donald Trump's trade-related payments to American farmers have quietly become the mother of all bailouts.
Back when General Motors and Chrysler faced bankruptcy during the Great Recession, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama pumped billions into a rescue of the auto industry. That bailout ultimately cost the public about $12 billion when everything was settled and loans repaid.
But that looks like small potatoes compared with the farm bailout underway now. So far, Trump's direct payments to farmers hurt by his trade dispute with China have totaled some $28 billion more than twice what the auto bailout cost, according to calculations from Bloomberg Businessweek. And the payments are still flowing with no end in sight to the trade dispute.

(46,672 posts)to show that small farms decreased considerably because of Trump's poor decisions. The sad thing is that the sloth off will continue during the next presidents term because that is just how business works, and it will all be blamed on a Democratic president if they can't fix the problems Trump created in their first two years of their term.
