Mitch McConnell Doesn't Have The Votes For His Sham Trump Impeachment Trial

https://www.politicususa.com/2019/12/13/mitch-mcconnell-impeachment-trial-votes.html

Posted on Fri, Dec 13th, 2019 by Jason Easley
Mitch McConnell Doesn’t Have The Votes For His Sham Trump Impeachment Trial

Mitch McConnell promised Sean Hannity that he was going to work with Trump to hold a sham impeachment trial, but he doesn’t have the votes yet to do it.

Here is McConnell laying out his plan for a sham trial:

There is only one problem. McConnell doesn’t have the 51 votes that he needs to implement his plan.

According to The Plum Line:

McConnell could of course refuse, and instead call a full Senate vote on a process that precludes witness testimony and the soliciting of documents — which McConnell reportedly favors, because he wants a quick trial with no circuslike calls for Hunter Biden’s head — and no damning new revelations. If that passed by simple majority, that would become the process.

Of course, McConnell might not have 51 votes for such a process — because a handful of vulnerable GOP senators might balk at voting for something so obviously rigged to protect Trump. Indeed, reporting indicates he doesn’t have those votes yet — which means he can’t yet do what he promised Hannity he’d do.

Mitch McConnell doesn’t have the votes to blow off Trump’s impeachment trial. There is still a chance that a few Republican Senators will come together and demand a full trial. If this happens, everything that Mitch McConnell promised relating to the structure of the trial will go up in smoke.

The sham trial is not a done deal yet, and if the American people push hard enough, it may never become a reality.

Trump, but I know there has to be a political angle and plan in it for Romney. I don't believe Romney has an altruistic cell in his body.

I also don"t believe Romney would be much better for the average American than Trump. He would be more intelligent and have a sense of decorum, but that is the best I can say for him. He is a corporate creature through and through, indifferent to ordinary, daily lives.

Does he plan to push out Trump and run in his place? Or is he planning for 2024? He would have Wall Street on his side. But is he fringe enough for the money people like Mercer and Koch?

Madam Speaker would not have made such a promise unless she had the votes lined up. Mitch is obviously drunk on his own record and thinks he can do anything, and it would be quite amusing to see his pants pulled down in public because he took it a step too far. Senators are, by design according to our Founders, a bit more encouraged to think of their place in the history books. It only takes a few to decide that retirement is preferable to humiliation and Mitch's plans go the way of Thanos' victims.

MM is too cagey to just let it all hang out and spill his strategy, but that's what he's putting out in public for the orangeanus and co. to eat up and piss off everyone else.

This just speculation but it appears to me that several Senators don't really want this charade admin to continue, even if they like some of the corruption, and MM would know that. The wannabe dictator has pissed MM off several times now and I suspect that MM may be ready to off him and now's his chance all while leading -45 to think he's helping him. So MM goes on the tubes and makes this outrageous claim as per -45 and everybody goes nuts but lets everyone know what the doltard has planned.

Broadcasting this strategy lets everyone know and gives many the cover to revolt and not allow the acquittal. Let the circus begin, so much will be exposed that it could help us clean house like no other catalyst. Many will be going to court for their own misdeeds if we win this thing but we'll have to force them to make that choice. I wonder what MM really has in mind because I don't think he's really telling the truth. I hope his opposition in his party is larger than we think. Perhaps he's signaling to the Speaker about something.

Acquittal is not an option and we'll need to make that perfectly clear to everyone.

Yes. Why would McConnell stare at the camera and make a bizarre statement that, if taken literally, could mark another Constitutional crisis, unless he's using the moment to give Senators the chance to challenge the indefensible.

Perhaps McConnell is setting up a reaction to his statements that allows a GOP internal rebellion. It's great movie scripting material that might get past the treatment phase. But OTOH, the entire Trumpy presidency has been stranger than fiction all along.

It's now more likely than ever that GOP Senators will feel less stifled when they are asked to react to McConnell's surrendering of the Senate to Trumpy AND Putin.

Two days ago I was writing about the nation's pending collapse in the aftermath of a Senate acquittal. While that's still possible, there may be other possibilities now emerging.

But another part of me imagines sipping espresso at an open cafe in Paris when in complete denial that German tanks are poised to roll into the City.

Normally the President of the Senate (the Vice President) votes to break the tie. In this case, the Vice President has a conflict of interest, as he has a vested interest in the outcome. So I would think Pence (or ANY Vice President, for that matter) would be required to recuse in an impeachment trial. So what happens if there's a tie?

Also, when doing the math for this proposition that McTurtle doesn't have the votes, did the writer take into account that Manchin will likely vote with the Republicans? Come on, we all know he will.
