Although analyses and studies by psychologists and neuroscientists have provided many thought-provoking explanations for his enduring support, the accounts of different experts often vary greatly, sometimes overlapping and other times conflicting. However insightful these critiques may be, it is apparent that more research and examination is needed to hone in on the exact psychological and social factors underlying this peculiar human behavior.
1. Authoritarian Personality Syndrome
Authoritarianism refers to the advocacy or enforcement of strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom, and is commonly associated with a lack of concern for the opinions or needs of others. Authoritarian personality syndromea well-studied and globally-prevalent conditionis a state of mind that is characterized by belief in total and complete obedience to ones authority. Those with the syndrome often display aggression toward outgroup members, submissiveness to authority, resistance to new experiences, and a rigid hierarchical view of society. The syndrome is often triggered by fear, making it easy for leaders who exaggerate threat or fear monger to gain their allegiance.
2. Social dominance orientation
Social dominance orientation (SDO)which is distinct but related to authoritarian personality syndromerefers to people who have a preference for the societal hierarchy of groups, specifically with a structure in which the high-status groups have dominance over the low-status ones. Those with SDO are typically dominant, tough-minded, and driven by self-interest.
3. Prejudice
It would be grossly unfair and inaccurate to say that every one of Trumps supporters have prejudice against ethnic and religious minorities, but it would be equally inaccurate to say that many do not. It is a well-known fact that the Republican party, going at least as far back to Richard Nixons southern strategy, used strategies that appealed to bigotry, such as lacing speeches with dog whistlescode words that signaled prejudice toward minorities that were designed to be heard by racists but no one else.
4. Intergroup contact (... lack of ...)
Intergroup contact refers to contact with members of groups that are outside ones own, which has been experimentally shown to reduce prejudice. As such, its important to note that there is growing evidence that Trumps white supporters have experienced significantly less contact with minorities than other Americans. For example, a 2016 study found that
the racial and ethnic isolation of Whites at the zip-code level is one of the strongest predictors of Trump support. This correlation persisted while controlling for dozens of other variables. In agreement with this finding, the same researchers found that support for Trump increased with the voters physical distance from the Mexican border.
5. Relative deprivation
Relative deprivation refers to the experience of being deprived of something to which one believes they are entitled. It is the discontent felt when one compares their position in life to others who they feel are equal or inferior but have unfairly had more success than them.
Common explanations for Trumps popularity among non-bigoted voters involve economics. There is no doubt that some Trump supporters are simply angry that American jobs are being lost to Mexico and China, which is certainly understandable, although these loyalists often ignore the fact that some of these careers are actually being lost due to the accelerating pace of automation.

(8,200 posts)I was interested in just what the so-called evangelicals believed so I attended two church groups for several sessions. I was warmly welcomed into the congregation which I believed is an important aspect. They immediately included me without reservation. It soon became apparent that acceptance and rejection was dependent on accepting what the leadership conveyed. I believe that it has appeal since it is an immediate substitute family and friendships. However, it was apparent that acceptance was predicated on total agreement with their strict ultraconservative beliefs. Any questioning resulted in immediate rejection as being unacceptable. I saw this happen and those who wanted to remain quickly renounced their error. They are solidly staunch Republican and there is no tolerance for anyone who doesn't toe the line. Conversations are one sided with strict condemnation of any liberalism. Someone says so-and-so is advocating homosexuality and should be shunned and everyone quickly adds their affirmation. Similarly, to question Trump's behavior leads to automatic rejection as unsubstantiated liberal bias. I wish more people would get acquainted with the extent of influence that these congregations have on freedom of thought and how stiffing it can be. Another thought is just how removed it is from actual religious convection. The services are designed to be highly emotional high-tech theatrics and with little if any theological depth.

(17,608 posts)it needs to be positive contact, preferably where people work together to achieve common goals.
Having neighbors of another race, if everyone gets along and keeps their property reasonably well, actually supports that.
Unfortunately white people who work in situations where they have lots of contact with blacks ... but it's mostly negative ... tend to have their biases strengthened. (example situations, people in law enforcement, or sometimes even social services.)

Massive election theft is always a big part of authoritarian takeovers. And these days we're seeing massive election theft -- combined with large numbers of people so confused by lies that they say they don't know what to think. Or what to vote for.

(67,112 posts)The US has never really been exposed to a tyrant and a regime trying to take over the country and really turn it into an authoritarian state and a dystopia for many. Europe and other countries have been exposed to this and can see/feel what is going on. Many Americans IMO just do not grasp the severity of the impending situation.

Who could have even imagined that normal people could turn into ones who could confiscate pets as yet another item in a long list of ways to persecute Jews and then kill the pets because they were tainted by Jewishness? Surprise! And that was only near the end of the beginning of the end.
As for Americans, before we gave most of it away under Reagan and the Bushes ("We have to get off the back of business!" ), almost anyone could have security and a measure of prosperity merely by finishing high school, acquiring an affordable skill, and working full time like everyone else. Not having to strive or suffer has definitely made us less resilient and more foolish.

(58,785 posts)I paid for the first two years of my degree (at a community college) by writing checks the same way I wrote them for groceries. The state college required the same kind of budgeting school clothes and Christmas gifts did. Never a dime of debt. Kids today need to know there's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't have the same or even better.
Computer teaching was in its infancy, but I could see that it would greatly increase the quality of education at much lower cost, even greatly cut down the time to acquire a degree for those who went for that. Ha!
I guess it's best I didn't guess then what was coming by the end of the century. Certainly it was a mercy that my children were safely grown before degradation of jobs and education made that kind of comparatively effortless social mobility mostly a thing of the past.
Well, we have work to do.

(2,809 posts)The entire time my parents got the Waldenesque idea to "move to the country, live independently, off the grid" in the mid-70's.
Of course the discovery process to the painful reality of fierce independence cost our family, well, everything. The ending of their tale of independence was heart-breaking, with Fox Noise blathering their "patriotic" nonsense in the background.
It made my teenage years a nightmare living in a town so white-bread it was suffocating me, then doubly so when word got out I was not only of a mixed racial lineage, but also gay. LBGTQ youth of every stripe live homeless, forced to desperate actions for survival, then are labeled "hustlers", endure public, shaming criticisms of speculation into bedroom activities that no one of any orientation wouldn't find disturbing and privacy stripping.
Heavens is the picture above disturbing. It could just as well be the faces of the lynch mob who came after me.
I'm so glad for the hispanic side of my family, who rescued me without judgement, sheltered me from the white menace and helped my start in college. And... my uncle gave my parents the riot act over the phone for throwing me away when I graduated.
These days, nearly that entire town... Trumpers all. I'll never see it's quaint but nauseating facade again.

(2,809 posts)It was for a bit over a year I had to lay low, till I turned 18. Luckily, I knew my way around San Francisco from a previous sojourn. How I managed to steer mostly clear of urban dangers, I believe a benevolent guiding spirit was helping me along.
Most maddening aspect of that homeless experience was: it was relatives of the Phelps clan, of Westboro Baptist Church of Hate who stirred up the angry mobs. I had some PTSD issues for quite a while.
Forever when I hear of any (especially rural snaggletooth whitey white whites) (was that over the top? I can never tell) claiming and preaching their "Christianity", I tend to believe it would be of the sort Jesus Christ would walk the other side of the street to stay away from.
My parents and many, many so called "good kkkhristians" made life at 15, 16 years old for me a living nightmare. I'll always hold my Uncle C. and M. Ortiz in great reverent memory for the unconditional love and shelter and support they provided.

(58,785 posts)cause a look at what fascism today is.
This article in Vox is pretty good. Even though the expert starts out waffling around about attitudes on both sides in the usual false-qualization CYA, he does get to it: that fascism is a form of extreme conservatism and that it's growing in America. Anything below recognizable in Trump's messages and supporters today?
This is why fascism flourishes in moments of great anxiety, because you can connect that anxiety with fake loss. The story is typically that a once-great society has been destroyed by liberalism or feminism or cultural Marxism or whatever, and you make the dominant group feel angry and resentful about the loss of their status and power. Almost every manifestation of fascism mirrors this general
Why is the destruction of truth, as a shared ideal, so critical to the fascist project? Its important because truth is the heart of liberal democracy. The two ideals of liberal democracy are liberty and equality. lll Freedom requires knowledge, and in order to act freely in the world, you need to know what the world is and know what youre doing. ...so to smash freedom you must smash truth.
...I think thats right. Part of what fascist politics does is get people to disassociate from reality. You get them to sign on to this fantasy version of reality, usually a nationalist narrative about the decline of the country and the need for a strong leader to return it to greatness, and from then on their anchor isnt the world around them its the leader.
For another thing, I think the current movement of leaders who use these techniques (Vladimir Putin in Russia, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, Viktor Orbán in Hungary, to name a few) all seek to keep the trappings of democratic institutions, but their goal is to reorient them around their own cult of personality. ...
Again, I wouldnt claim not yet, at least that Trump is presiding over a fascist government, but he is very clearly using fascist techniques to excite his base and erode liberal democratic institutions, and thats very troubling.

For those who've never understood why some are so appalled by Bernie Sanders' movement on the left, in this time of great change and anxiety, his opposition to the Democratic Party (and indifference to who wins if it's not him) dangerously empowers the far more numerous and powerful fascistic conservative RWers.. LW sandersism aligns with Trump's Repub and religious right's messages that our liberal democracy is in decline and that Democrats fighting to protect it must be defeated. They differ greatly of course in who that leader is and whether universalist socialism or hierarchical fascism would make America great again, or finally. But no sensible person doubts America's increasingly fascistic RW would win that one and make the massive changes to our 250-year-old liberal democracy that both are rallying people to mostly blindly demand. Followers on both sides don't even begin to understand what's at stake, and neither camp is explaining that.
