(15,377 posts)Most of us, Speaker Pelosi included, knew that the Senate was going to be a joke. The alternative was to do nothing, to not impeach the forking bastard. But that alternative was the path of a coward, afraid to do the right thing because of the consequences.
How the Senate handles the trial is entirely on the Republican Party and its senate leaders.

(115,620 posts)It might be good to withhold the Articles for a couple of weeks and let the process go thru the rinse cycle?

...if the pukes have changed the rules, Constitution and country, we need those pukes on record for history, posterity and future reference...
...even if our current crop of Dem leaders can't make hay out of this impeachment, a more talented future crop of Dem leaders certainly will...
...for sure...

(15,875 posts)If the articles of impeachment DON'T go to the senate he wins and if they DO go to the senate and they exonerate him..... he wins.
We just get a "shame on you repukes" bragging rights.. Hopefully that turns into democratic votes in 2020... YMMV

(5,339 posts)I think it is a much stronger position to point to a sham of a trial than to not have a trial. Because then the spin is "see, they didn't even think the charges were good enough to send on."
Plus, get those asshats on record supporting Trump because they will have a harder time backpedaling when shit gets even worse. And we know it will.

(1,660 posts)If she withholds them she'll be tarred as an obstructionist who doesn't care about the rule of law, and the Democrats will take a big hit in the election.
If she sends them to the senate they will be defeated, and the president's worst instincts will be emboldened.
In either of those scenarios the nation loses.
In my view the only hope is for Schumer and McConnell to pull off a "deus ex machina".
Place your bets.

The republicans are putting pressure on the Democrats to accept a censure as a compromise. This is similar to pre-trial pressures in a criminal case, for a plea deal.

(46,227 posts)Schumer already has written to McConnell suggesting a trial schedule starting early January. You can bet the ranch that Schumer and Pelosi consulted with one another before that letter was sent.
Even if trying to hold the articles in the House could work (and as a practical matter it almost certainly can't work) or would be a politically smart move (it wouldn't), how exactly would it play out? What would be the endgame. At what point would the articles ever be sent to the Senate or would be the "strategy" be to never send them?
