I've criticized the service clubs for being too wingnut, but my membership is permanent and I work from within. So a few months ago I did the internet shopping thing in search of permanent poppy pins instead of the paper VFW ones, and ended up with these with the motto that might be British. I gave one to friends/family. I wear mine to the local post, not just on Veterans Day.
So tonight on Brian WILLIAMS there was a clip of the Speaker being asked about Dear Leader's whacked letter (possibly written by Stephen MILLER from jottings of Dear Leader), and there was our poppy pin being worn by Madame Speaker!!!1 I am over the moon!1
Brits wear them all the time. Sometimes the whole guest panel with Graham NORTON all have them on.

(6,477 posts)The motto underneath is "Lest We Forget," the traditional motto that accompanies the poppy for Nov. 11 dedications. US fans of English soccer would have seen many dedications with the poppy last month before the Premier League games.
It is a little strange to wear a poppy pin not on Veterans Day, though.

(70,683 posts)WW I was supposed to end all wars, so when another one came around the concept here was broadened to all veterans, not just the dead veterans of WW I. The inspiration of the poppy came from the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCRAE.
*NO* I didn't make them!1 I bought them on the internet!1 - I ground off the pins on the back to not tear clothes with pin holes. While I'm nowhere as talented and creative as you, you artist you, I *am* a little: Tonight wrote 600 words of the book you are going to illustrate!1

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Its a great poem. Do you think Nancy is wearing it in solidarity with our military?

(53,410 posts)Shes just wearing it even though its not for a really specific reason. For some reason I thought it was for a reason having to do with Armistice.
No one says you cant wear is as jewelry anytime.
UTUSN
(70,683 posts)for Armistice/Veterans whether it's on November 11 or not. The meaning associated with it could never be divorced to making it just any piece of jewelry.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)I mean I understand that it can be worn anytime. Which makes perfect sense because its specific so no matter when you wear it people recognize its significance.
A simple example is you can wear Christmas jewelry any time but its still about Christmas first, and jewelry second.

(70,683 posts)Have you seen "Gods and Monsters" the movie about James WHALE the director of Frankenstein? Much of it is in flashbacks to his (now called: ) PTSD over his war experience. Our parents who were pre-WW II, would have the vivid impressions of WW I horror.

(90,645 posts)We also received paper mache poppies to wear in remembrance, and were told that WWI had ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and that even though WWII came afterward, it was still important to remember. I don't remember when the powers that be decided to call it Veterans' Day and kind of forget there had been an Armistice.
That's a nice-looking enamel pin, by the way. Thanks for the post.
