Reportedly Hoyer and Pelosi have been discussing this as a possible option. They do not wish to send the impeachment over to them since several of them have said they cannot be fair or impartial, as required by the Constitution. Maybe she should hold it for a few days? What would be the downside?

(14,047 posts)And let the Republicans know that more investigations, more possible Articles of Impeachment and more public hearings will take place.
There is no point in letting Trump run a sham trial, but also send a message that as long as they reject reasonable procedures, there will be more scandal exposed.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Senate just went ahead with a trial even if the House doesn't submit anything. The charges and the vote are a matter of public record.

(2,580 posts)The offenses have been promulgated and hopefully Trump won't risk continuing to cheat while the spotlight is on him. Now get the subpoenas responded to and fill out the dance card to a point where the GOP has no excuse to resist. Slow walk him to the cliff, then push him over.

Keep investigating and watch Mitch get what he deserves. Yesterday the DU poll had 69% "Don't send them to the Senate yet, but keep investigating" compared to 23% "Send them to the Senate now".

(26,727 posts)In fact it would assist Republicans in overlapping the primaries.
I happen not to think its constitutional, but strategically speaking it would take months of delay (or not sending it at all).

(21,554 posts)How seriously are the American people going to take this is after weeks of hearing that the rule of law and national security are in immediate jeopardy, that we cannot delay this process anymore and must hold an impeachment vote, that we then turn around and say "never mind. we'll just hold these here for now." We have impressed upon the American people that there is as ense of urgency here. We can't turn around and then basically say the opposite.
That's not going to play well. That plays right into the GOP narrative that we just wanted to do all this to make the president look bad.
If the Senate wants the trial to be a completely sham, LET THEM DO IT. Let them be the ones that end this process as a "political stunt", not us, and let them run on that in 2020.
We've already crossed the point of no return on this, and it was never a secret that McConnell was going to shit all over WHATEVER articles we sent him.

(18,577 posts)Holding back undercuts everything that has been said about the importance of impeachment.
The downside is that the public at large, who are lukewarm on removal now, will see this process as political gamesmanship. While it will not shift many voters towards supporting Republicans, it will likely sour them further on DC 'business as usual'.
It gives the middle voters no reason to support Democrats. That is a win for Republicans.
