(16,616 posts)We need to investigate why 35% of American minds have so weakened to the point that this approach can be effective. We are past "warning signs" of authoritarianism; this type of rhetoric is well along the path, as are his rallies.

(18,837 posts)...the "outsiders" are "outside" for a reason. If they're racists, they're only going to find comfort and a sense of "belonging" among other racists. If someone is busting their ass and barely getting by, some people dig in their heels and commit to what they've chosen to do. Others complain and seek "understanding." A LOT of people want to be "understood." Occasionally, they will find someone who "understands" them. More often than not, people who have that need and hunger just need to hear the words "I understand you" and the need is satisfied, whether they are "understood" or played for a sucker.
Trump's "genius" is that he's a predator without feelings or a conscience. It's all about getting what he wants via manipulation. The "birther" thing was an experiment that worked. He knew he could prey on the weak and stupid and gullible and bend them to his will.
Jim Jordan, in particular, has played this angle to the hilt during the impeachment hearings. Last night he went off on a screed about how the Dems aren't after Trump, "they're after YOU."
There is no "US" in the Republican party, or in Trump's world (which is now the same thing). It's all about seeking out weakness in order to fulfill an agenda.

(26,257 posts)And I am beyond worried about the 'backlash' from his cult. I don't think it will rise to the level of an actual civil war scenario, because I doubt people with the mentality of his cult can actually organize, in a sustained manner. I am worried about the individuals and small groups of hard core wackos. Anyone with a bumper sticker that indicates they are Democrats should keep an eye on their surroundings.
